Well, got out opening morning with the .300 1950 EG - first opportunity was a big 8-point buck that I jumped but then turned around with a grunt call. I let him go cos i'm after meat, but it's not often your first opportunity is a big buck. I did get a nice doe later that morning, which is what i was after - doe or fawn... two more tags to fill.

Anyone else get out with their 99's yet?

This seems to be a predominately Salvage thread so I'll throw in a Marlin for good measure. It's a lever gun does that count? grin Been keeping a watchful eye on this bruiser and he's establishing a pattern in extremely heavy cover so enter my 444 and a 310gr cast.

13 days till the opener in Michigan. I will be hunting near Curan Michigan in a good old fashioned deer camp with the same group of guys that I have been hunting with for 20 years. Still debating what to take. I got a 1955 99F in 300 Savage with a 2.5X Weaver that has killed a lot of deer, walking around gun will be either my 1917 H in 22 Hi Power, or my 1925 G in 303, both wearing Lyman receiver sights, Also thinking about my 110WLE in 250-3000, it has an Orginal Burris 3x9 Fullfield and is a tack driver with my handloads, it is a great blind gun, it weight just over 9 lbs, heavy but accurate and no recoil, and it has killed my two best bucks, I have a lot of confidence in that gun. Deceision, deceisions? Have a safe and relaxing time in the Woods.

Planning 2 days with the 99eg .308. Don't really expect to connect. I have to travel 4 hrs or so to use a centerfire, but I just want to sit in the woods with the silly thing...

Gun season is just around the corner. I've always liked gun season for the camaraderie with friends and family. It's not about the hunt. That's what bows are for. This year I'm taking my 84 year old savage 99 that My grandfather and uncle used many moons ago. I also just want to Sit in the woods with it.

Interesting. Clearly whoever restocked it was a lefty. You? Your uncle? Your grandfather? It just doesn't look like a grandfather's gun wink Caliber?

My uncle had it drilled and Fajen wood put on in the early 60's. I am also left handed so it works for me. I put an old 4x Leupold on it. It's a 300 savage. If you check my previous posts here you will see the story how I aquired it.

Well, screw the 375 99 back up plan.

I just got back from the range with a pre-war R in 303 Savage wearing a Lyman 56S. Sum bitch, I can't believe the groups I was getting at 100 yds, never thought it was possible.

Originally went to the range with it wearing a King tang sight and then realised I couldn't move the front sight anymore to line it up so I brought it back and put the 56 on it, what a difference!

Probably got 20 guns in 303 Savage but this was the first time I ever really sat down and dialed one in, wondering why I've never done it before.

One thing I miss about scopes though is that the heat from the barrel doesn't blur it like it does the aperture of a peep sight. But then a deer isn't gonna wait for your barrel to cool.

Shouldn't have to shoot it more than once anyway Joe. Sounds like a cool rig.

Ya it is and hopefully it doesn't come to a second shot. Still taking the 110 in 7mm-08 out first, she's lucky.

Here's the R in 303 all ready to go. I owe Blair a big thanks for this one.

It is truly amazing what you can do with a good receiver sight.

That is a nice gun MD.

I wouldn't argue with anybody that told me pre-war R's were the best 99's ever made.
