I've had three Hunter Compact Edges on various M70 Fwt's and one Bansner... I'll go with the Bansner from here on out. I don't like the McMillan's low comb and drop. The Bansner has a higher comb with no drop. It fits me like a glove.

And I really appreciate folks posting pictures of their rifles, that helps me out alot. I'd wager the Compact Edge wouldn't be for me, I like a 14" LOP and it looks like the forend is pretty small. I'm 6'1" or a tad over and not exactly compatable with compact things in general.

The factory Fwt pattern looks nice, though I've never been a fan of the schnabel tip or the thin forend in general.

So far, I'm still liking the pre-64 MC pattern, though I'd love to get a Super Grade in my hands for a try.

I'm 6'3" or a bit more and a long ways from lean....My rifles wear a 14" LOP as standard fare though I've got Mickeys from 13.5-14.25. I've got big paws and the open grip on the Compact is made to order. I could be talked into the Sako Hunter for some applications, but the SuperGrade is for bigger rifles (meaning heavier contours) or not at all. I've a SuperGrade on my 416 RM and it's good, but not great.

Got a funny feeling the SG pattern will be a bit bulky for a light rifle like a FW 280,but some like that.

I have had the FW McMillan (but before Edge)and it was too heavy for me.In Edge it would be nice although I think scnabels are best left to pictures myself.Serve no useful purpose,but I'm nitpicking.It's still a good stock.

I have the Compact Edge on a pre 64 M70 FW 270;agree with those who say it has a bit too much drop and would prefer a higher comb;but the downside of this, for me,has been about "0" to be honest.I had to snap shoot a large muley off-hand two years ago with it as he ran at 75-80 yards,and the reticle was "right there" when it needed to be..and I've killed with the rifle to 340 yards...not much to complain about there either.For fast shooting and general use,I have seen no differences at all between a Compact Edge,a Banser,or a Brown Precision Pound'r,(although the Pound'r is easily the lightest,and makes the lightest rifle in a M70 action).

Recoil wise a 280 is piddling;I would not want a Compact Edge on a heavier kicking rifle,but no problem on a 270 or 280.

I like to carry rifles in my hands and the Compact Edge is very slim through the floorplate;slimmer than a Bansner or Brown Precision and nice to carry in just one hand.It is light, rigid,slender through forend and grip and handles like a flash.

A pal recently built a light 270 on a pre 64 M70 action and one of my Krieger #1 barrels in a Brown Pound'r.I know of no better combination.More expensive but mine has been around since the 80's,killed lots of game all over the west and back here.The rifle is now on barrel #3...I know of nothing better.They are more rigid than anything I have used;tough,high comb and slender grip.many people on here would be reaching for their wallets if they held this rifle.

At the end of the day,and after owning about everything under the sun in synthetic stocks (I bought my first one in the late 70's IIRC)my version of "best"for a light 270 or 280 is still the Brown Pound'r...this may be heresy on a McMillan dominated site but I have yet to use anything better.If I were going to do a light 270 or 280 it would be my own first choice.

Magnum rifles,the game changes....

I had an McM Featherweight stock on my M70 before I got the classic MPI Kevlar. In spite of McMillian's assurances that it wouldn't, and in spite of the fact that I had them build it with added graphite fibers to stiffen it, the thing would distort when using a shooting sling. It would shoot 3+ inches to the left at 100 yds. The current MPI Kevlar Classic stock does not do that. E

E: Not many synthetics will take full sling tension if a guy is wrapped in.

My Pound'R will but that thing is made of 100% (what?) kevlar or graphite? I forget.But it sure is stiff!

I prefer the Brown stocks to Mickeys as well, for the ergos and the "feel."

I have a Brown Precision on my Whelen, and my 300 Win Mag. The 300 Win Mag is not a lightweight but the Whelen, handles like a 22.

I was hoping that I might ask you to contrast the Sako Hunter, which, I believe, is basically the new Winchester Hunter and the regular FWT pattern. Specifically, I am interested in the ergos of the grip. Ie. relative openess and thickness between the two.

I do have a compact stock on a Model 70 FWT and like it okay in this regard. Just barely open enough for me. Also in comparison I have an Legend stock and this is like it was made for me. Don't want to put a legend on a p-64 FWT though, just too big IMHO.

I am contemplating ordering one of the Hunter stock for a p-64 fwt I have and having never handled one, thus I have no idea how I will like it. As a comparison, the OEM pre-64 fwt stock really does NOT work for me at all through the grip area - waaay too closed and small overall. When I grip the wrist and place my trigger finger in a natural/neutral position it is about 1/2 in forward of the trigger forcing me to slide my had back on the grip to the point where my pinky is almost off the grip. I have a fairly large hand, hence the problem.

Any thoughts or opinions in this area would be appreciated!!!

Bart, gimme a little time and I'll get some measurements that might help you.

I suggest you call Mcmillan and have them send you a Hunter for demo purposes, It will cost you some shipping fees but that's better than several hundred for a stock you don't care for...

Brown Pound'r on one FWT Classic; Echols Legend, edge fill on another. No complaints with either.

Echols Legend would overwhelm a Fwt IMO.

Also, I did not know that Mcmillan would do that - send out a demo that is - I will ring them up and inquire about that. That would be a great option.

Kinda agree with Brad on the Legend stock for a FWT. Just too big a pattern for my personal tastes, but as pointed out earlier, this is all a very personal thing and there is really no right or wrong....

I think you would like the Hill Country pattern if you can get one.
