I have been eyeballing a GB auction for a Carl Gustaf M96 Sporterized by Kimber of Oregon chambered in 6.5 X 55mm.

A google search tells me it is a standard Swede Mauser Model 96 or 96/38 that Kimber inspected, rebarreled, stocked and sold as a converted rifle.

I can't find anything about it in my Blue Book...so just wondering if anyone can provide help on a reasonable price? I doubt the auction is a good price...but not certain. Also, does anyone have experience with these 96s sporterized by kimber - are they any good/accurate, do they need to eat only lower-pressure rounds than the more modern choices?

That's a 300 dollar rifle all day long, unless you place a value on the roll stamp and import marking.
It would more fun and cheaper just to build your own.

I like it here. They let me swear.

That's exactly what I was thinking. Overall, it just seemed way to over-priced.

Thanks guys

Kimber even chambered some of these 96s in .308 Win. Not worth but about half of what the seller on GB is asking.

I've got an even better one for ya. Pawn shop in Butte today. Funny looking rifle on rack. Sticker says Mauser 6.5x55. That always lights me up. When I got it in my hands, it reads Modelo Argentino 1891. I had seen the magazine on the rack, and thought something was up. Some one had put a 6.5 barrel on an Argy, "sporterized" the stock, complete with a "bump" for a pistol grip, and a long black painted "ebony" forend tip. The bolt had been replaced. Actually, I think they cut the old bolt off and welded it back on. Lots of file marks. I kind of expected most of that. What the real surprised was, was the price. $500! Almost dropped it! WOW It was several kinds of ugly.

I think, therefore I am, conservative.

I had one of the Kimbers, it would consistently shoot 1-1.5" at 100 yards with factory loads, I wish I still had it. The Swede doesn't need to be loaded hot. It's absolutely wicked with 140s running 2650 to maybe 2700. It shoots flat and long and penetration is exceptional IMO. It also doesn't do a lot of meat damage.

The Kimber on GB is waaaay over the top. I'd go $375 for a very clean one. Kimber did a good basic job on them.

I couldn't get $300 when I tried to sell mine. I even had it coverted with a Dayton Traister speed lock kit, commercial bolt shroud, and Bold trigger with side safety, and a semi-inlet walnut stock. I bought mine as a barreled action ($250.00) and with speed lock conversion, trigger, and new handle I have far more than $300 in it. I doubt with the the ramline stock I could get $300 out of it.

I was only trying to sell mine because I had too many irons in the fire and needed to cut back for other projects. Since it didn't sell I'm going to just keep adding money to the pit and rebarrel with a #3 24" SS Lothar Walther this summer, thinking I'm going to set it up as my daughters first elk rifle. She is recoil shy and I think she should be able to handle a 6.5X55.

I believe they also chambered some of them in 22-250. I saw
a 6.5 Kimber in my area about a month ago for $550 and it sold
already.
