I've hunted deer with a muzzleloader for the past 30-32 years. The last 6 in a row in NM. Have never shot an elk w/one though. My son and I will have 14 CO pref pts after this years draw and are planning a unit 76 MZ elk hunt for next year. Am thinking I will shoot my TC 54 Renegade w 430 gr Maxibullets. Have been casting them myself and they are very accurate with 110 gr of Pyrodex. Shot a mule deer once at 150 yds running straight away, the bullet entered the left hind qtr and was found under his right ear. Over 40 inches of penetration. Factiry sights limit most to 100-150 yds. Get an arpeture sight and practice a lot. NM regs are quite a bit different than CO but should be able to shoot out to 175-200yds.. John

Go to load for here in CO is a 348 gr. Powerbelt, ahead of 110 gr. of T7.
I'd rather be a free man in my grave, than living as a puppet or a slave....
