I would like a lighter smaller carbine, and was thinking of contender rifle in 30-30. Are they accurate? Any issues?

i have had a couple and i wish i hadn't sold them. they were very well balanced and shot excellently. mine were in .204.

i have heard that they are not making smith and wesson much money and that they may discontinue them.

I put Varget on my cornflakes...

only issue is that if you like it, you'll likely be looking for excuses to find more barrels in all sorts of calibers which can get expensive. have had lots of barrels, lots of frames, no real issues. after i got used to the weight of the TC's though, even mid-weight bolt guns feel heavy. have quite a few 'tender barrels that beat MOA accuracy.

if you handload, the 30/30Ackely Improved is the bomb-diggity in a trim 6# gun. wink

I agree, it took a while tocure my barrel bug.

I pack a T/C carbine in 35 Remington with a Chote stock and peep sights around in my Samauri and on my walks around our Ranch.

To my mind it is an incredible level of performance to weight.

I have both G2s and the originals, and both work well.

I cured my carbine barrel fever by putting a fiber-optic sighted, T/C Custom Shop, .375 Win barrel on my G2 - It worked out great.

Don't over look the 7x30 Waters in a carbine barrel with 120 gr. Noslers.

Agree with FyrepowrX: main problem is what barrel to buy and then which barrel to use.... I managed to settle for four: a .22WRM, a .410, a .25-35, and a .32-20. But if I ever find a 28 ga loose....

i like tinkering with various calibers, and that coupled with a fondness of the gun & the way it handles resulted in a serious barrel-hogging fetish. i have been slowly reducing the number of pistol barrels i have, but the # of carbines is on the increase.

always wanted a 22mag, that one is on the "to-do" list....is yours a factory barrel, or a custom?

my .375win, topped with a 2-7x Elite = 5#7oz.

does that .375 win come back a little in the 5.5 pound rifle? I would love a 375 but I have to research it a bit. On the other hand the 5.5 pound weight of that carbine is about perfect in my mind!

yup, it does have a pretty sharp snap to it, noticeably harder/faster recoil jab than the .35rem, 7x30, 30/30AI, etc. but, it is an excellent shooter, not overly picky as to loads, and is a hammer on deer.

FyrepowrX, my .22WRM is a 16 3/4" from MGM. It even shoots the "lead free" ammo we are forced to use in much of the state!

I have a G2 Carbine w/23" Custom Shop barrels in both 204 and 17hmr. Both are topped w/Leupolds and are extremely accurate. The 23" 204 is my go-to varmint gun for walking and daytime hunting. It puts 40gr factory Hornady loads into .3-.4" at 100yds w/regularity from the bench. Shoots anything you feed it into ragged holes. Don't know if I just got lucky or if everyone has this kinda luck w/the Custom Shop barrels but mine are both crazy accurate.

Well I hate to brag, but I have the 28 gauge too. I had it made at the Custom Factory. Mike Bellm said he has the tooling to do it from PO Ackley's old shop equipment, but not the time because his business is good.

I have a 308 Bellm Mike Bellm did for me with his intregal muzzle brake, 358 Alpo from White, stock .223's in both pistol and carbine length, a 50 Black Powder from Bulberry, a 6mm Van Horn, and the 21" tapered factory 35 Remington, and in pistol length a 222, a 357 Maximum by Mike Bellm, a .22WMR, and a 45LC.

I have 3 frames, a G2, an AA T/C, and ablue T/C with a Bulberry action job.

I am Rick and I am adicted to T/C's.

Wonder what it would take to get Bellm to whomp up a few 28 guage barrels? I asked MGM about making some, but never got an answer--guess they are pretty busy too. I just missed the last of the Custom Shop 28s that MGM had....

I'm on the hunt for a 21" 30-30 and a 28 gauge. In fact with that combo i'd pretty much be set for life around here.

Well, have a MGM 30/40 Krag that shoots well. However the search
goes on. Next there is a TC barrel in 375JDJ. It shoots well and the barrel adds a little weight to the gun and it is not hard to shoot recoilly speaking. This fall a 23" 44mag barrel was found that had been rechambered to 444 Marlin. That barrel will hunt this fall and again this one is easy to shoot. Bullbury also makes a 444 barel for the G2. Also have a TC 28 Ga.barrel. If I wasn't so inhibited about spending I would have purchased a 22 Hornet barrel a year ago.

The ideal deer rifle for me is a large caliber, heavy weight bullet moving at a moderate pace. So I am looking forward to using the 444. I don't understand it but for some reason I am not interested in the 45/70.

Jon
