That is what i was told at work. Some guy told me his friend took a 600 yard shot on an elk. He missed...
I asked him what his drop was at that range? He said he didn't know, but the guy was shooting a fast and flat 270 so it was no problem.
Then I was told they guessed at the range, but it was probably 500-600 yards. The shot was right at dark too. .
No rangefinder, no turrets etc, no idea on drop. Sounds like a perfect longrange situation.

Ignorance is bliss
I'm always amused at folks on both ends of the spectrum; those that think hitting long range targets is a piece of cake even equipped as you have described, and those who think that shooting anything over 250 yards is unethical and pure luck if you hit it....
The people wringing their hands over Trump's rhetoric don't know what time it is in America.

I told him it was dropping in feet at that range, and not inches and he didn't believe me.

Quit giving in inch by inch then looking back to lament the mile behind ya and wonder how to preserve those few feet left in front of ya. They'll never stop until they're stopped. That's a fact.

223, It is hard to believe, but there are lots of these guys out there..several years ago, I was hunting in the mountains of an eastern state..If you try, it is easy to get some longer shots, which I prefer to sitting in a blind waiting for a 50 yarder..nothing wrong with that, just not my temperment..Anyway, one of the guys in camp, ask me to range a mt. we could see some very open field..often we spotted deer there before season..I think the range was 625 yds. or close..He said he wanted to try a shot with his .270..I ask how high would he hold, just a couple inches was his reply..like your pal, he didn't believe the bullet would drop feet rather than mere inches..!!!!

the only good thing is the elk was probably pretty safe at that distance.

I had a similar conversation with a guy...but the cartridge was a 300 Weatherby. He had shot a moose at "600 yards...".I asked how he was zeroed and where he held.Said he held dead on,and I said he'd have missed at 600...
When I told him the drop was in the vicinity of 4 feet at 600 yards,he looked at me like I was nuts.

The same guy that told me the story told me he wounded a bull last year after shooting at it longrange. I asked him if he practiced longrange and he said "no." He then said he needed a bigger gun...certainly he didn't need practice with what he had.

Had a co-worker tell me once about a buck he shot at 800 yards with his 300 Win Mag. Since he didn't use turrets or a rangefinder I asked him where he aimed to hit a buck at such a distance? "Aimed a little high on the shoulder, but still on hair" Amazing stuff a guy hears at work...

I talked to a guy at the range who, when regaled with a similar claim of a "600yd" deer kill, cried bullschit long and loud, and challenged the guy to hit a sheet of plywood, stood vertically at a measured 600yd, for five shots at twenty bucks per shot. Easy C-note right? They went out to some rural property, with LOTS of witnesses present, and of course, the knuckle head never put a scratch on the plywood.
The challenger made no claims of any long range shooting ability, but he knew enough to know there was a hell of a lot more to it than many/most think.

Lots of guys shooting lots of cartridges at very long ranges usually hold "right on top of his back" and hit em everytime. Heard a guy at work the other day whose .270 WBY drops 18" at 800. That's a flat shooter. mtmuley

My program can't calculate that high of MV, but with a 140 AB, its well north of a 6000fps muzzle velocity. Thats a flat shooting 'Bee. : )

I guess it's better to be way, way off in your drop estimation and miss the critter by several feet than it is to guess pretty close to the correct drop and end up wounding one.

Seen more than one guy walk up to the bench at 200..... and exclaim: I didn't know this was a 300 (400...500...etc.) yard range. Then, they don't believe the big red "200" sign hanging above their head.

I heard a guy telling me the other day that the .308 is so much faster than a 30-06. He told me his fool proof method of proving this fact was to shoot one of each at a canyon wall hundreds of yards away and see which one hit first. Of course, firing them one at a time and remembering the amount of time it took for the first bullet to arrive down to the nanosecond. Then he says, i like to shoot 220 grain factory stuff out of the 30-06, and the 150 grain stuff from the .308. I told him that in that case, the 30-06 is slower, but with an equal weight bullet, there is no comparison.
30-06 till i die, the greatest round ever! I carry a gun because a cop is too heavy! CEO of a Turdlike People: Turds & Tats Division... (per Ingwe )

Like my Daddy used to say, "Fudd's Law #1, The World is Full of Jerks."
I find proof of this every day.
The corollary to this is Fudd's Law #2, "Loneliness is vastly underrated."
