yeah, a saddle ring carbine. Don't have it yet, but supposedly excellent bore, circa 1900. I'm kidding at 7 lbs, guessing it's really between 8 & 9. We'll see if I can figure a short range hunting load for it, as it has only barrel sights.

Short range?? How short do you think THAT would be?? Barrel sights have some adjustment and Marble's or Lyman tang pee sights are MADE for High Walls. It'll kill a hog deader than a politicians honesty.

He sorta kinda hasta use BP Gunner. Original rifles in that caliber would be a mite hairy with a smokeless load.

Good to hear, glad he's not gonna use one of those squirrely light weight smokeless loads.

ET, what weight bullet was it you used to crush that sow with your .44-90? I forget, was it round nosed, or have some flat point on it?
And yeah I have some Swiss FFg here, which I bought for the .54 Hawken. That a good choice, or should I get some 1.5Fg?

I'm hoping there's room for someone new 1/13 and would like to know if anyone would be interested in sharing a ride to Wilderness from Western NY or if I could catch a ride with someone who is headed West on I-90 and passing by Rochester?

On the other end of the spectrum, I have this gorgeous 250/3000 that I just bought from Fireball2, I wonder if that would be a smidge too light for a potentially large hog...
I do plan to try some 80gr TTSX's in it, if the slow twist will stabilize those then I would predict a winner, especially since I can run them out the snout at a good 3,300-3400 fps. I also am planning to test fire some 100gr Silvertips and Core Lokt's. Totally old school with those for fun and grins but I want a good clean kill. Animals are more than bullet testing medium and deserve to be killed quickly and humanely.

MARK! Are you going pig hunting with that sweet little 250-3000?! Go forth with your Savage and exercise dominion over all the creatures of the earth my friend! Someway, somehow I have GOT to take the rifle hunting and get some blood on it. Rifles are made to be shot and hunted with, regardless of how pretty they are. My Len Brownell 7mm MAshburn and pretty 416 Rigby both took rides on my Rokon this fall. I spare them no adventure and give no quarter in terms of hard use to any and all. Honest dings and such do not detract in my opinion, in fact they add some character in my view. Yeah, this one will go if I sell enough toys this weekend to make the journey.

I just talked with the guy who did my hunting in Africa DVD. He is interested in coming and making a really good proffesional quality DVD about this hunt, especially if I try to spear one with an Assegai, and no I was not kidding about that. His work is outstanding and he has done many TV shows and commercials for Avery outdoors etc and anyone who has seen my hunting in Africa DVD knows his stuff to be top flight and then some.
What do ya'll think about my trying to kill one of these beasts with my 250/3000? To little of a rifle to work well?
MARK
PS off to the Spokane Gun show right now, so wish me luck! I SHOULD be able to swing the hunt in full and airfare when I return. We will soon see and know.

If you sell a couple AR's and a few 30 round mags you will have enough to pay for everyone!

Here's some thoughts on a DVD. I a long time ago (when I was younger) used to go raft the Rio Grand every year, camp several days etc. Other souls were a big group of lawyers. We all went to act anyway we wanted, drink as much as we wanted. We were in the middle of nowhere, so we didn't bother a soul. You could be your real self and not have to worry about your reputation. What happens at the hog hunt, stays at the hog hunt.
