I make the most miserable cole slaw going. Must be my mother's recipe, I never liked hers either. Anyone out there go a good one they would like to pass on? I'd sure appreciate it!

From Mrs. Scott F

Grate or finely chop one head of cabbage (approximately 4-5 diameter) (this is not an exact science). Grate or finely chop 1-2 peeled carrots, (depending on size) you want enough color variation to look attractive. Mix lightly. Add a small handful of raisins. (again, use enough to look balanced, raisins & carrots are optional). In a small bowl mix, 1 tablespoon sugar, 1 tablespoon white vinegar, teaspoon salt, to 1 cup mayonnaise. Mix. Stir in enough milk, a little at a time, to make a smooth dressing the consistency of pancake batter. Pour the dressing over the slaw & mix gently. Slaw is best when chilled for several hours, but may also be eaten immediately. Taste & adjust seasonings to suit. It may need extra sugar, salt &/or vinegar to make it flavorful with the right mixture of sweet & sour. It gets better with age, some extra liquid may form in the bowl, just stir it in & keep enjoying.

Scott I use a very similar recipe but with out raisens, Rather I fold in a can of small shrimp and add slices of hard cooked eggs on top. This is the only time I use canned shrimp. I prefer canned in Cole slaw.i also add a spoonfull of coarse ground mustard. No salt, salt makes slaw watery if held for a while.

The raisins go way back with us. When we were dating twenty seven years ago she was making Cole Slaw for a picnic. I was bold enough to ask if she put raisins in it like my grandmother did. She turned and asked if I liked it that way and when I replied that I did I got a huge hug and I think a few tears were involved. Seems as how her first husband had never tried it that way and put her down when she made it for him with raisins. That is the way I have had my Cole Slaw every since. Sometime we get real lucky.

Scott, mine is similar to yours but I cube a decent sized apple and add it just before serving. Sometimes add a little french dressing to mayonnaise for a change. It's all good!

Along with the rasins a bit of crushed pineapple goes well in cole slaw too.

I like a couple of spoonfuls of horseradish, a little good mustard, and no raisins. Mix that in with the mayo-vinegar sugar and other stuff. Gives it a good bite.

I will see if I can find my wife's recipe. It has no mayo, kind of a sweet sour thing, but darn good.

Mrs. ScottF,
We did the coleslaw recipe tonight. It was great! Thanks! It must have been good, even though I halved the recipe, there was almost nothing left! I think just for a twist, the next time I make it, I'm going to try putting "craisins" in it.
Thanks again for sharing it!

Scott-

My thanks to your Mrs. for the cole slaw recipe as well. I made it on Saturday and by Sunday afternoon it was all gone. Almost had some for Sunday breakfast.

I'm gonna do it again soon!!

Marzetti's Slaw Dressing. I throw in 1 tblsp of balsamic vinager. Slaw fit for royalty.
