I can't stand that yellow light being on so I have a set of sensors in each of two sets of wheels---winter and summer tires.

Two weeks ago I had the studs put on again and the guys at the tire store here couldn't reset them to the second set of sensors. A fellow in another store said you have to stick a bent paper clip into the data port and short out two pins, thereby erasing the computer's memory of the other set of sensors.

At least now we Toyota owners don't have to go to a Toyota dealer to have them reset each time. That could get expensive. When that was the case, I just put black tape over the yellow light and ignored it.

The fellow was confusing resetting the yaw sensor with resetting the TPMS. Shorting out the pins can be used to reset the yaw sensor for the vehicle stability control if the tire shop you use doesn't have the latest type of alignment machine that will reset it through the computer.

Resetting the TPMS is actually pretty darn easy:

Mine has a bad spot at the vey end of the frame about 4" long I need replaced.

I am looking for a newer one to replaced my 1997 Dodge 1500 4x4.

Oh yeah, to answer the OP...

2007 Tacoma DCSB V6 Sport 4x4, 146,000 miles, my son's truck now. Replaced the battery, right front wheel bearing, both tail lights - that's it. Truck is well used, not abused, fluids changed with the good stuff on schedule. Not burning a drop of oil, feels like its just now broke in.

I tried to reset it several times---going by the book--and it never "took". The tire shop that couldn't reset it said something like it would record the frequencies of the four sensors and the spare, but it wouldn't "write it". That's all I know, and they reset TPMSs all the time, so I don't know what gave on mine.

They also go bad in about 8 years, and need to be replaced. At $200/each, I decided to live with the warning light...

Think of it this way. 10 years ago people said the 2002's had too much electronic crap as well. grin

All joking aside though, I do agree. I'm very happy with my 2011 Tundra but I'm concerned about the electronics, especially as the vehicle ages.

The tire store here says the cost of the sensors have come down alot in the last couple years. Mine, he said, are now around $65 each.

A couple years ago when my sensors were $125 each at the dealer, I bought a set of four off eBay for around $100.

had my winter tires/wheels put on my 2007, and they said they couldnt do it w/out the sensors. Ive been running my winter wheels with no sensors for five years. So I had them put them in, $30 each installed, $120 total.

Just turned 101k on my 2007. My heater fan clicks on low speed (need to take it apart and make sure its balanced), and my temp sensor/ compass stopped working at 40k. I think I can fix that with a solder gun. No other issues.

I'd buy one again.

Got a '96 ext. cab 2.7 auto. 4 x 4. 110,000 K. Replaced the starter and rear springs. Just put new tires and a battery in. Ready for another 110,000 K. I've had some great offers from strangers to buy it , but I'm keeping this one. Damn good truck! The air conditioner still works after 16 years!

We sold our 94 tacoma, 4 cyl with 275,000 on it and it is still going strong for the college kid thatbought it.We bought a used 2004 with 2400 miles on it, v-6 andit now has about 80k on it. No maintenance on either except brakes tires plugs and oil.

I attribute the longevity to the fact that I change oil and filter every 3000 miles, not like guys running synthetci and running 10K or guys running regualr oil and changing at 5-6K.

We got 24 mpg +or- with the 94 and usually get 22 or so with the 2004.

We have a 2005 4WD that we bought new. It now has 220,000+ miles on the odometer. We change the oil and filters every 5,000 miles using "regular" Shell Rotella 5W-30 as Toyota recommends. We have averaged right around 2,500 miles per month since we bought it, so the oil gets changed about every other month, on the average. Still getting the same mileage as it did when it was new.

We haven't babied it at all--it has seen its share of rough country and hauled some loads on a double axle flatbed trailer. Other than factory suggested maintenance and a couple of recalls (one for checking the accelerator pedal and one for replacing a faulty spiral cable in the airbag system), we did replace the middle u-joint in the rear drive shaft. It was getting loose. Because the bulk of our miles are on the highway, we haven't even had to replace the original brake pads.

I'd look elsewhere to attribute longevity. What you are experiencing is the same as those who folllow the manufacturer's recomendation and change oil and filters at longer intervals than you. What the experts say is that you are wasting oil. Lots of us have been watching and listening on this for a long time and have come to the same conclusion---oil and engines are better than when 3,000 mile changes were the norm.

Kid wrecked my '97 Tacoma when it had 330,000 miles on it, still not using oil, and used only regular oil with changes at 5,000.

Sounds to me you spent $1,200 you didn't have to......

I put 175,000 on my 2001 Doublecab. That was with the original water pump and timing belt/tensioner

I only have 39k on my new-to-me 2009 Regular cab though.
