I shoot 165 gr. Barnes TSX bullets almost exclusively. At a MV of 3390 fps, it's hard to find a big game caliber with flatter trajectory. Accuracy is sub-MOA with this bullet. Mind if I ask what barrel length, powder, and charge gets you to 3390?

I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA

And....I'd like to know if it's braked as well or not?

(I've used the 300 Wby quite a bit as I have the 7 Mashburn Super. Bottom line, I'll take the Mashburn each and every day but that's just my way)

bsa, My barrel has way more than 400 rounds thru it, and is still going strong. I suspect it will last me for the remaining years of my hunting career.
I use RL22 in my reloads, velocity from a factory 26" bbl. BTW, this load duplicates chrono velocity from Wby factory ammo in my rifle. YMMV.

The reason I asked was I couldn't get near the same velo's with my handloads that I got with the factory stuff. So I quit trying. For me barrel life is not such a big deal because that's not a rifle I put a lot of rounds through.
Nice sig line, btw.

This is just my experience but to date I've never come close to the factory speeds with my own loads with any of the Wby rounds and or the WSM rounds.
Honestly, I'd not want to go there even if I could.

I dont shoot mine much since the 30-378, but i'm rethinking that. Its just a great round.
Not that it means anything, but with all the new carts out I found it kinda interesting that guys like Randy Brooks used it not too long ago for marco polo, and Jim Shockey often uses it on his mountain hunts in the 'stans'.

Bob.....I shot that sheep in the mountains in the background of the moose picture. We were above timberline on a pretty steep section and when I shot him, he rolled a good distance down into a ravine that had some grass and trees - I get asked that a bunch.
PennDog Thanks buddy! Reminds me of folks looking at my goat pictures. "It doesn't look that steep." Ya, right! Bob

Because if your goal is to shoot what is arguably the best all around caliber for world-wide hunting, then the 300 Weatherby is it. If you are limiting yourself to the Continental US, I'd stick with an 06 or for that matter a 270. Allen Day would say it is the 300 Win Mag. that is the best all-around. He might even say the .338 win mag. He felt the 300 Weatherby to be a little much and requires a 26" barrel. Anyone else remember Allen Day? What would he add to this?

Alan was right....the 300 Weatherby struts its stuff better from a 26" barrel. But this doesn't mean that it doesn't work well from a 24" tube, which it clearly does.
Depending on how you arrange barrel length, magazine and bullet seating for the 300 Win Mag,and given equal barrel lengths, there is really not a lot of difference between a 300 WM and a 300 Weatheby...from the game killing angle, almost none at all.

My buddy has a Vanguard in .300 Weatherby that he bought at Walmart for $399.00. He has a Zeiss Conquest 3-9X40 on it. It is a joy to shoot and very accurate. Great gun for small change.

He was a guy that had "been there and done that" ! Corresponded with him a few times and regret that I did not save his replys. He did feel that the .300 Weatherby, while a great cartridge, was a little "much" for his liking. Allen felt that a .300 Winchester loaded wih Nosler Partitions was the way to go. He hunted the U.S. and Africa. Allen was a very gracious gentleman that would go out of his way to try and help you out. If I remember correctly, he also enjoyed the .338 Winchester. Jim

The right answer to the OP's question is, "Because you can."
A 30-06 with 180 grain partitions can kill anything on this continent and most others. Add 400fps and you can do it with much more style and grace.
Don't blame me. I voted for Trump.

I have an Ed Brown Damara in .300 Win Mag and it's probably all the .300 mag I'll ever need or want. I do respect the .300 Wby. and those who use them.
IMHO, one would need to be shooting at extreme distances before the difference would matter.

Why should I shoot a 300 weatherby???? That's what I said about 20 years ago.the answer was so good I have 4 of them. One lh mark 5. And 3 lh customs all shoot 180 partitions or 180 accubonds but all with 84.5 7828. I actually love 7mm's but still go to 300 wtby for elk and oryx. Went through the Dakotas ,300 and 300 Ulta mags, and 30-378 and still go back to the 300 weatherby. Even have 1000 rounds of new Norma brass.ill, never run out! Want one get two!!!

1K of .300 Wby. brass. Wow, that's a lot of money tied up in brass. And, for sure, you shouldn't run out... DF

I like the 7mm Weatherby Mag the most of the Weatherby's that I've shot. More weight selection in bullets than the others (257,270) and it doesn't seem to hammer the shoulder as much as the 300 to me. Yet, it still runs in the standard length rifle. If you want more out of a 7mm (common/commercial) you need to bump up to a STW and longer action. I haven't dug deep into a Mashburn yet comparing cost etc against a Weatherby. I think the 7mm's are enough for the lower 48 and in NA except for the big bears. I personally would bump up to a 338 for those and skip the 300's entirely if that were on the menu regularly. If I had to choose a Weatherby it would be 7mm,270, 257 300, 340 in that order. If I lived where elk and up to 500yd +/- shots were regular I would buy a good 7mm Rem Mag with quality optics and call it good. My shots only range out to 300 yds at the most and I'm quite happy with my good ol 30-06. I'd be set even if things were to get a little longer than norm.
Keep your powder dry and stay frosty my friends.
