Wyo....I think your future professional reputation will probably remain intact...considering Treadwell was a nutcase with no common sense regarding or formal training with respect to....BEARS..., you being a colligate level wildlife biologist possessing the opinion you do of Treadwell and I'm guessing his kind (human)...have a lot going for you, keep up the good work!

After all you are hanging at the Campfire....

This guy was so unbelievable nave, that it killed him. In the film he mentions that he is studying the bears in Alaska. I really didnt anything that I would call scientific about his study. I seriously doubt that he has any scientific credentials, biology degree or even experience with animals. It seemed very amateurish, especially with all of the bad language. At points when he rants about the park service and the government, he came across as someone going through paranoid delusions. This documentary doesnt deserve any praise.

He had a death wish...there are no other reasonable answers for such thoughtless behavior. Why the media gives this kind of hoopla attention...well...I already know....IT SELLS!

I remember the "Into the Wild Book", the poison (form the roots of a plant IIRC) being so insidious that he was slowly starving to death without realizing it, the poison painlessly and without overt symptoms inhibiting his metabolism. By the time he realized the roots were to blame for his growing weakness it was too late.

Indeed something that could happen to anyone new to the area, and not at all in the same league as the bear guy.

I don't think he was naive. Like someone posted above, he knew the danger and talked about it all the time on the tapes. I think he got off on it. He was obviously a whacko, and spending all that time out there alone made him even crazier.

The part I liked best were the foxes. I thought it was amazing how they seemed to be as tame as dogs and followed him around like dogs.

And, finally, although he was a nuttcase with a deathwish, who here on this board hasn't dreamed about being able to spend a months on end in the wilderness? For most of us those sorts of fantasies involve buckskins and rifles in sort of a James Fenimore Cooper thing, but the urge is the same. In some ways I respect him. Crazier that an outhouse rat, but he said to heck with it, dropped everything and did something that many of us toiling back here in the real world dream of doing (minus the maneating bears, of course).

I think a lot of people long to "get back in touch" with nature. For many of us,that involves hunting/fishing,for another segment, that involves going out and trying to make nature into a petting zoo.One is reality, one ain't.It doesn't take a genius to figure out which is which.

The Native guy in the film said it best-we've have had a 7,000 year agreement with the bears. When it gets broken, something dies.

For some reason this reminded me of "The Man Who Would Be King"in that finally one of the bears figured out he was nothing special. I just hope someone else doesn't try it. I don't mind taking a few chances, but that was ridiculous. Somebody should have told him the old adage about nine out of ten bears will leave you alone, but you never know which bear is the tenth one. I think the adage is actually about black bears, odds may not be quite as good for brown bears. although can be pretty tolerant--but not predictable. Still, you gotta love those bears and those who huny them fais chase.

I finally got around to watching it tonight.

Arrogant, presumptive and immature. Can you thay unsthable? Oh how cuuute!..... hey, come back here with my f**king hat! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Kept watching for the kicka$$ bear footage--I'll give him that--and Alaska scenery. The foxes were cool too.

+1 on "Into The Wild"

I like how sad he was that the fox died.

The Old Man always said to us when we were little "Some animals live, and some animals die. That's the way of the wild."

"This duty fell upon me and was the worst job I ever had in my life.
