450 Nitro in #1 with 500 grain pills was pretty rough.

3 1/2" #4s in my Super Black Eagle almost broke my collar bone while shooting it prone in a rut of road at a bird. Got the bird but I remember the pain of that shot more than any other.

Without a doubt, my brother Randy's Thompson Centre Contender pistol with the 12" barrel in 45-70. 500 grain cast lead bullets , and IIRC the MV was around the 1600 ft/sec area. All I know was that the concussion of the shot going off shook my lungs in my chest cavity, and using my best handgun technique, it systematically unlocked my shoulders, then my elbows, and then torqued in my grip to twist my wrist. It was a bear to shoot.

I do know that the muzzle blast permanently changed the part in my hair to the other side, and my face looked tanned for several months that winter. laugh FUN!

an unbraked .460 Weatherby was the heaviest blow, and I only shot it twice, the second one just to prove I wasn't a puss.

a .340 in an Edge stock was the most vicious, fast and painful.

my little guide gun with Buffalo Bore badass .45-70s is no walk in the park off the bench, either.

on the other hand, a 9 pound M70 whose stock fits perfectly is no problem to put 40 rounds through, and my .450/.400, at a little over ten pounds, is really fun to shoot....as long as you don't let yourself think about what each cartridge costs.

An 835 Mossberg Turkey with some hot 3.5's off a bench. About a 7 lb gun, convinced me quick that an auto is the way to go shooting 3.5"s.

I was going to say an Enfield Jungle carbine in .303 British. That was 16 years ago and I sometimes wake up curled up in the corner of my closet crying thinking about it. laugh

A friend had a 10 gauge NEF that I shot. When I pulled the trigger my shoulder blades clapped together.

A Sako AV in 338 Win Mag with a high comb stock. Kicked like a mule fired from the bench. Gave me a headache every time I shot it, I finally sold it. By comparison, I shoot my 300 Win Mag with a straight combed stock off the bench 20X with no problem.

Ditto! shot 405 grain hard cast, gas checked bullets and it was very accurate, just NOT fun to shoot. Next would be a Bennelli Nova turkey gun with 3-1/2" #5's.

Unbraked 460 weatherby and a 500 A-Square are two of the worst.

A dang Mod 70 in .340 Wthby Mag shooting 250 grain Ultra Velocity off a bench.

I thought it had misfired and rammed the bolt back into my face. Shot half a box through it helping my buddy get it sighted in. Watching my experience, he sold the rifle and never fired a shot.

And louder than all get out.

Remington XP-100, 14",skinny bbl., 7BR rechambered to 7mm-08. L.E.R. scope/center grip made it so you could only shoot it from the Creedmore position (one hand). With factory 140's, the torque would really twist your wrist and the recoil would smack the action against your forearm. After 2 boxes, traded it for a S&W 6" M29. With Norma fact. 240gr. "carbine" loads it was a pussycat compared to the XP-100.

Williamlayton: I went to a "range day" once that was put on by the now defunct Warshals Sporting Goods store of Seattle, Washington.
The store in fact had hired me to be an additional roving range officer with safety for all in mind.
The store brought along many Rifles and pistols for prospective customers to handle, see and shoot.
One of those Rifles was a Weatherby MarkV in caliber 460 Weatherby Magnum!
That particular Rifle they charged a dollar to shoot it once, as opposed to all the other arms that were free of charge to shoot that day.
I got in the line to shoot that 460 Weatherby and was about 15th or so as I recall - regardless of where I was in line the barrel of that Rifle accidentally came in touch with my palm when it was my turn to shoot it and I was shocked at how absolutely hot it was.
The recoil from the "shot" was so horrific to me that I decided then and there to stay away from heavy recoiling Rifles as best as I could.

H&R single shot 12 ga. 3.5 turkey model. Turkey loads with 2.25 oz. shot. No .375s, .338s or heavy 45-70 loads I've shot can remotely compare.

405 Hard Casts being really pushed out of my .45-70 Marlin GBL....I'm used to it now.

T/C Encore 45-70 with 325gr Hornady. Also my grandpa's double barrel Stevens he bought in 1946. Pull both triggers at same time. Knocked me back a step.

Not the hardest kicker, but the absolute worst rifle I have shot is my Brothers 1956 Brno ZG47 in 270...the butt pad was one of those old horrble red things that had gone hard with a myriad of deep cracks in it.
I fired eight shots out of the rotten thing and had blood blisters all over my shoulder, each time the damn thing fired, that rockhard pad would open all those cracks and pinch the heck out of my skin.
I went home and replaced the pad with a new Pachmayr..a nice big, thick, soft one.

These are my opinions, feel free to disagree.
