I wanted a light, short walkabout rifle. I had this M600 with a painted hardwood stock that looked awful. Then I found an old M660 stock that appeared to have been used to drive nails or tent pegs. I cut off the black fore end tip and put a barrel band for sling use. Then I sanded it down to remove the finish, gouges, and impressed checkering. I ended up removing a lot of wood by sanding and, the more I removed, the better it felt. It also has one of the excellent CMMV (?) cast metal floorplates.

The result is a 6.5 lb delight. With the Pentax 2X7, sling, and a full ammo sleeve, it is exactly 8 lbs. It is a 308, so it gets your attention when you pull the trigger.

I have a 600 vent rib in 308. I am sighting in a weaver XS backup sight using the factory front, installing an aluminum trigger guard, and mounting Grandpa's old Redfield 1.5-5x20 post.

I think I will then keep the XS back up on a black tie strap on the sling.

These are my favorite rifle and I hope to get a few more.

I would also like to get a factory vent rib rear sight, as I do not have one.

Can't wait to find a donor action for my project. Just need to hash out the details on it

Here's a former .243 that I rebarreled with a 20" Rem takeoff 7mm-08 barrel, added new bottom metal and Duracoated matte black - light weight but not too short, rust resistant, mild recoil and a real pleasure to carry.

Alright curiosity is getting the better of me. I have a couple of questions to those that have modified their Rems.

Could you post a picture of the action without a stock on it?

Can you replace the trigger, and the safety release lever? I know rifle basix and timney make one for this.

Has anyone modified the bolt release mechanism?

Planet of the apes rifles! I do love that moniker; goodness. You about ruined my laptop, as I nearly spit beer all over it.

I hate the rib, and the safety latch that comes with them. But that dogleg bolt really gets me horned up.

Here is mine. 243 mohawk Brown precision stock that I finished myself. No bottom metal just a 700 adl trigger guard. Comes in at a even 7 pounds. Trigger is a timney which included the safety and took all on about three minutes to install. Some stocks might require a bit of inletting for the safety as it sits out a little further from the trigger housing than the original. Have not done the bolt release mod. I have owned many of the 600 series rifles and currently own three. Got the bolt removal down pretty good.
