George, I'm not used to it either, and that's a good thing.

Funny how the first chilly day of Fall feels way colder than the same temps during Spring.

I've gotten better results from all the Alliant Reloder powders in recent years than when I first started cold-weather testing 20-some years ago. I suspect they learned something when they had to change the formulation of RL-15 for military use in the late 90's. 15 used to be really bad in cold weather, but became pretty good after the military testing.

Kinda surprised about the H4831 result, as I haven't seen that much change with any of the Extreme powders when used in typical loads--and 150's in the .270 have to be considered a typical load. One thing I'm wondering: Was the test in the same sort of light conditions as the last warm-temp chronographing you did of that load? I've seen Chronys give different results in cloudy and bright conditions.

The photo of the dashboard also looks familiar! Lately I've deen taking two new batteries when doing cold-weather testing, and switching them out for each string of shots. In between I put the cold one in my shirt pocket, inside my coat, to warm up.

JB, the baseline 270 velocity was averaged from old notes, several different range sessions, I think it should be just under 2950fps(normal average).

Today, I shot the 270 in between the 300 WSM tests. All readings seemed to be working okay but who knows. Wish I would have brought some warm 270 ammo.

Thank for posting the results Sam.

My go to powder in the 243 AI is RL 17 and I'd been wondering about how it would handle temp swings temp swings. Good to hear it seems to be hanging with the Extreme stuff.

Amen brother.

When you shoot a 270 towards something it's like an eagle flying mach speed shooting lightning bolts.

That's about as good of a statement I've seen on the Fire in a long time!

And any without a 30-06 is a communist.

Sammer, thanks for the test... the H4831 really surprises me.

Nice work Sam! Majorly surprised by the 4831. I'd like to see how different primers affect this sort of thing, too.

I can't help but wonder (I have little experience with such temps) if magnum primers help at all with this phenomenon. What's the story fellas?

A few preliminary tests I've run indicate so...but I haven't tested the results much.

On the day I did it, W780 only lost about 20-30fps out of my .270 w/ 140gr Accubonds and magnum primers. With standard primers, the same load lost closer to 100 fps.

This was on a day in the upper single digits compared to a 60-70 degree day.

Wouldn't this prevent having to do that?

Yeah, it could be that the CCI 200 in the 270 has something to do with it? Testing a mag primer side by side large rifle primer would be intersting.

Whitetail, lithium are all I use in the little cameras. They do work alot better in cold temps.

Oh no, not this year Brad, Winter's already over....grin

Here's what I will do though, it's +10F right now(been warming up all night) so I'll clock the 270 again this morning. Ammo and rifle should be at least 10F by the time I 'test'.

I'm guessing it will run +2900fps.

-20F shooting/hunting is extreme, it also can't be very good for scopes.

Well the RL 17 results make me feel better. I use 64grs of RL17 with a CCI 250 and a 168gr TTSX in a 300WSM for 3100FPS. Load was developed at about 15C. I've used it on MD and moose at -25C and -18C respectively. The shot on MD was over 300yds. So far it has worked well. I intend to take to SA in 2014.

Thanks Sam for that info.

I've been using RL-17 in my 9.2 X 63 since last early April, through the summer and fall. Don't see any difference in POI at 100. I've upped the ante a bit for this winter. Haven't had a chance to test yet because the weather has been crazy around here. A few days ago we had spring temps (+13C/55F) plus rain and all the snow disappeared! Yesterday we had very blustery conditions and today started out at -18C/0*F)yet sunny. But I hope to get out soon to see what I'm getting from 1.5 to 2grs increase.

BTW, I always use WLRM primers regardless of season.

A few years ago I did extensive testing of my 350 RM in both summer and winter conditions using WLRM primers and a healthy dose of RL-15. If there was any diff. from extreme changes in temps, I couldn't find it.

I've also found H335 to be very temp stable in both 45-70 and 458 WM during extreme cold weather. On the other hand, RL-7 showed great variance from hot to cold temps. I've replaced that with H4198 which is very good, though faster than 7.

Thanks again.

Bob

Here in the hideous, hot & humid south, I tried similar tests only on the other side of the spectrum (hot wx). My max range for testing was 37F to 95 with RL-22 in a 300 Weatherby, IMR-4350 in a 338 and H-4831 in my double. Both RL-22 and 4350 showed a bigger change (about a 50-60 fps loss) whilst H-4831 remained fairly constant.

A good principle to guide me through life: “This is all I have come to expect, standard lackluster performance. Trust nothing, believe no one and realize it will only get worse…”
