Heard some discussion on this elsewhere and in the spirit of shooting insight I'm wondering what you beaver shooters prefer for caliber and whatnot.

Was talking to an old hand from out in the Missouri Breaks region that swore a .22 LR was inadequate. Said they would bounce off their head. I dunno. They don't bounce off pig skulls. And I've heard preferences from .22 caliber up to 57mm. I've heard some of them aren't hard headed at all. ???

Anyone ever been charged by a beaver? I don't know much about them actually. I mean, are they prone to being shy or are they junk yard vicious?

What say you? I'd like to hear about cartridges, platforms, brains or center of mass....go for it!

Dan

Beavers are quite a challenge. They can seem very illusive, then BAM..."How the hell do I get rid of this thing."

Don't know the caliber I use, but they usually don't like it when I over penetrate.

I can't say about best, and I can't say if a .22 will bounce off their skull or not....but my Old Man had a school buddy named Mark ( both of them now gone for many years ) who lived on a farm West of Saco Mt right along the Milk River. Mark was continually working on the beaver population on his stretch of the river. One of the rifles that he happened to use quite a bit was an old Model 70 Winchester....pre War '06 with a Lyman Alaskan scope. That old rifle had a pile of miles on it. I don't believe I've ever seen a more tired Mod 70.

Used to work for a biological supply house collecting micro invertebrates that flourished in the runoff in ponds and small lakes. Had to kill a couple dozen beavers over the years.

Spot light and 000 buck was the best combo I found.

I've handled lots of beaver in my day. (Nuisance wildlife trapper.) They can be aggressive when handled live and cornered. Those two front teeth will go through wood so human flesh is a snap.

For head shots a 22rf is fine but a 22mag is much better. I would go for a cf if body shots are taken. Instant death is what is needed for retrieval.

Old and much use on beavers. Don't hardly get any better, hey? Wish the gun and Mark could talk. Need to hear from some beaver experts.

After plying your beaver with likker.
You have to decide if this is going to be an eating beaver.

splattermatic, curious about bait. What....???

I think 'Slave is one to something. Most drunks are more relaxed than pizzy. I've heard some like it, some gotta be force fed, but that kinda misses the point. How about a high limit Mastercard?
