I shoot a lot of wild birds each year in MN and the Dakotas and/or Montana and my favorite load is the Federal Premium 1 3/8 oz #5s at 1500 fps. The Fiocchis are good too, but IMO, the Federal load is more consistent.

My best advice is to really concentrate on the dog. Many people that havent hunted with dogs tend to not watch the dog enough and thus are not ready when a bird flushes. As has been stated, watching the dog will be one of the great pleasures you take from this hunt. then when the bird flushes, come from behind the bird and as you pass the beak smash the trigger. Think butt-belly-beak-BOOM.

After the bird falls, watch the dog again. A good dog can put on quite the show searching for a downed bird.

Have fun and be safe! Looking forward to hearing how it goes.

Thanks for the advice. This is pretty much exactly what i was looking to hear. I just picked up a box of Federal Hi Power Steel shot #6s. I will practice with it, and pick up another box before the hunt. I just cant wait.

I loved your description of the shot. Very aptly stated.

Do you have to use steel shot? If you don't have to, don't.

The lady i talked to said they dont require it, but they prefer you dont use lead. I have lead and steel.
