I think you've got merit to your comment. I'm going to call Beanland to day and see what he thinks also.

A #4 in an Edge ought to balance somewhere up around the front sling stud.

A #4 in an Edge ought to balance somewhere up around the front sling stud. Quit exaggerating SK! The balance point would be about halfway between the front action screw and the swivel stud.

All in fun. The only one that has to be happy with the rifle is the owner.

A Bartlein 4 in an Edge would balance right around the barrel shank I believe

The whole idea of a 9# rifle with an Edge stock does not support much logic. Light Stock & Heavy Barrel just don't go together.

While I totally agree with the above I used parts I had on hand and put a #4 Lilja in a classic edge. Hold on the front screw and its a little bit barrel heavy but not much. Balance point is just in front of the mentioned screw. The shank was cut back to just less than 3/4" of a inch and I guess that helped?
Wouldn't have believed it and tried several times to sell that stock. Now I'm very happy with the way it turned out.
Would I spec that same build?......prolly not as I'd go swirly but it don't suck as I would have thought.

I'm figuring that a fluted #4 barrel will balance close to what an unfluted #3 will. That's all I've got for reference, and I'm not going to go below a #3 for barrel weight. I'll probably end up going with a standard fill McMillan Hunter so the weight should balance fairly well. I don't need it too barrel heavy. I'd hate to shoot under everything I aim at because I can't hold it up...

If I was ordering parts I'd order standard fill for #3's and up.

#3 contour and under I'll go EDGE fill on my McMillan stocks. Anything bigger gets a McMillan swirly stock with standard fill.

You suckers have almost talked me into a #3 instead of a fluted #4. Not to mention I know where I can get a couple of the #3's on next week with no wait. The Micky is going to take a while.

And lastly pick a different mag range for the scope. 10x on high end is ample glass for a 7-08. There is a 3-9x42 im quite fond of for that particular application. But to each his own. I guess your 7-08 doesn't shoot well enough for any more glass than 10x. Try banging moa steel at 1300+ yards with your 3-9 and let me know how it works... Oh and to the OP- the Conquest 4.5-14 with target turrets is 50mm objective, not the 44. If you are building a do everything rifle, the Zeiss you have in mind will do nicely for hunting and bench work. No dumbphuck, i guess it doesnt. Jim Borden couldnt possibly feign a [bleep] clue as to how to build an accurate rifle with top end components. Besides your resident troll claims 6x scopes get him to steel at 1k. So why the need for the hubblesque zeiss? The 7-08 seems perfect with a 9 or 10x on top. Plenty to hunt anything the 7-08 is capable of killing at any sensible range
