When you strip the finish, or, if you sand, it will make wood fibre stand up like whiskers. You can't see it, but they are there. Lot of ways to get the whiskers gone. Some old timers use a smooth chunk of antler to take them down. Some will buff the wood. Lots of ways. I have to respectfully disagree with the Poobs on the steel wool thing. Anymore it seems to come apart and leave fibres in the finish. High quality 3M pads seem better, for me anyway. Not sure what to do about the oil soaked wood?
R. I have to agree with the disagreement, steel wool fibers can create a pita and on the last couple I used wet-or-dry 800 grit....a light touch of it. It also helps to apply your thin coat of Tru-oil or Minwax cause it fills the pores ever so slowly... Now, GOOD MORNING BTE!!!

Boy, after a slow weekend you Micks really laid it out these last two days. Long ass work days-I'm too tired to hang much but I leave you with a couple. Not sure who to address this one to... Had to be addressed to me (thanks) since I work for said company. Clyde

A friend has a 223/20ga combo. I'm going to figure out how to trade him out of it.

A friend has a 223/20ga combo. I'm going to figure out how to trade him out of it. I used to be really enamored by those Savage combo guns, until I actually held one. Uncomfortable for rifle use, and I couldn't hit much with it as a shotgun. Good idea in theory, but I've pretty much come to the conclusion that when I want a rifle, I'll pack a rifle. If I want a shotgun, perfectly capable examples of them are available. This coming from a guy who once packed a Sendero Special and a 30 inch barreled side by side 10 gauge simultaneously on a whitetail/pheasant hunt.

I use to have a 22/410 combo as a kid, killed many a rabbit, and bird with that gun. It was really nice back then but today I don't think I would enjoy it as much. Good times....

My pool of experience with the 24 is limited to one old gun (pre '65) so don't take this seriously. With cast bullets the .30-30 barrel shoot 5 x 1" with leaf sights from a rest at 50 yards. The 20 bore barrel patterns a little high at 25 yards if one uses the sights. If one ignores the sight it shoots pretty much to POA with buckshot. It weighs about 7.5# w/sling.
I've had the scope rail removed and a single ring base that will clamp on the rifle barrel for a Millett red dot is being built from T6 aluminum. The net weight change will be about +2 oz.
Not caring if it gets wet, scarred or generally abused so long as it shoots as well as it does. It will be a deer/hog killin' machine here in the swamps. Can't wait to shoot something in the face with it.
YMMV, but it's not a bad deal for $350.00 US.
BD
PS: The newer ones are too phoucin' heavy and of the wrong gauge/cartridge combo to interest me.

Tanner, My 24F in 223 & 12 gauage is my "back to the farm" or "beaver" gun. We're over run with beavers flooding our hunting land behind the family farm and I use the 12 ga for close beaver shots w/ buck shot and 223 for long shots. Handy truck gun other wise. The 223 shoot good even with the horrendous trigger (even after gunsmith work)and my scope still maintains zero even after shooting 2.75 buckshot loads. What I hate.. cross bolt safety and NO half cock (like a marlin 336) so its easy to forget And the scope raises your aiming point on the shotgun barrel so I need to raise it up about 4" at close range.
Neat gun, but accept the limitations. Pick it up if the price is low because mine would go over $600 if I sold it.
Other than that, How was the show Mrs. Lincoln?
