I have a spare Oberndorf made 98k action. I am kicking around making a 9.3 x 62. This will be a solid, not fancy, blue and walnut gun for North America; Africa may happen sometime way down the road.
What would be a good barrel length? I am thinking of a 4 wt Douglas with 1:12 twist.

23.6 worked for my build, it's what CZ makes theirs with.

Use barrel length in this case for balance and handling. The 9.3x62 performs equally well with barrel lengths from 20-24 inches. This cartridge has no problems getting effective use of its powder out of a shorter barrel - it is much like a 308 win in this regard. People (who will undoubtably chime in shortly) have built specialized rigs with barrel lengths from 18-26 inches depending on intended purpose. Decided what weight class of bullet you want to shoot - 250g, 286g, 300-320g and what sort of environment you want to use the gun in to make your choice.

23 to 24" would work for me....Whatever you decide, that's a damn good cartridge to build a rifle around...
I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA

MuleDeer probably knows more about the 9.3x62 more than any of us, he's written a article about it as well.
Probably responsible for it's intro back into the US

Two 9.3x62's. AHR with 23" tube and Ziess Victory. 98 FN with 22" Shilen, 6500 2.5-16x42 for load development, VX-6 1-6 with Fire Dot for serious work.

Very nice rifles DF. How do they shoot and which is your prefered bullet?

Chub Eastman (and some occasional gun writers) were beating the drum for the 9.3x62 long before I started writing about it.
I once shot my CZ 550 rifle against a Mannlicher-stocked CZ 550 "carbine" (21-inch barrel) with the same ammo on the same day, alternating the rifles. The ammo was both factory and handloads, and the biggest difference was 88 fps. One of the loads even chronographed a little faster in the shorter barrel, which isn't unknown.

Still working up loads. The CZ so far, has edged the Shilen/FN in the accuracy department, but that's with just a small sample of possibilities. The CZ is heavier than the FN. I have 200 and 235 gr. Hawk bullets coming, and have NAB 250's, Horn and NPT 286's and TSX 250's. I have JB's loads and have downloaded a good bit of info from the Fire and other online sources. When it dries up and the weather cooperates, I'm going to check them out and will report. I'm thinking the 250 NAB should be about perfect for general use and even for fairly long shots. I can get a CDS for the VX-6 and with the right load, 400 yds. shouldn't be a stretch. At 2,600 fps, that bullet will shoot flatter than many would think, and still has a fair amount of "juice" remaining at that distance. Another shot of the AHR CZ. DF

NECG front sight? Nice looking rig. Got any pics with the 1-6 on it? That seems like the perfect scope for that rig.

To the OP, Here's my Rem 700 in 9.3x62. Douglas #3 at 20". I Duracoated the whole thing ad then painted it (the Duracoat didn't turn out as dark as I wanted). I almost went with a #4 but am glad I stuck with the #3. I hollowed out a bit of the butt stock for weight loss and balance and ended up at 7 lbs 14 oz with scope and sling. I had the VX-6 on the AHR, but didn't take a photo. I think those are NECG sight. Check out the AHR web site for the full story. I traded for the AHR after I had already built the FN, so now I have two 9.3's. The AHR has a full '06 length box mag but a rather short throated chamber. The FN has an intermediate length box mag and a longer throated chamber, limiting somewhat the COAL possiblities. Too bad it's not the other way around... If I had traded for the AHR 9.3x62 before building the FN, it may now be a 6.5x55 or a 7x57. It could get overly complicated if I let it... DF Here's the FN with the VX-6. I later went with Talley QD's.

Cartridge is calling to me. Have Mcwoody Mcmillan Hunter, CDL donor action, and need a #3 contour Pacnor or Lilja. Like that sight of yours and like the one on Mojohands rig.
Mojo, that a Leupold 3x?

The 9.3x62 is a cool ctg. a real sleeper, IMHO.
It is very versatile and efficient, and can handle a whole bunch of possibilities.
And then, last but not least, there's the historical part of the story.

Thanks, Spotshooter, I can't decide which one I like better. The FN is lighter and handier, the AHR fancier and slightly more accurate (so far at least). The FN is a more practical using gun, less heart burn from scratches, dings, etc. I'm blessed to have such a "high level" problem to be wrestling with... DF

I ruined a Sako 85 270 by turning it into a 9.3x62 and putting a Mcmillan stock on it. It is accurate as all get go, but it pales in appearance to yours.
