Thought some of the young guys might want to see some "real" .270 bullets. That's a 130 grain Sierra next to the 160 and 180 grain Barnes,

I really miss those 180 gr Barnes .277 torpedoes. Wish they still made them. I still have a stash of them but its dwindling. It's a superb bullet.

I just shot some of the barnes 180 in my kimber 84L 270 - 3/4" for 3 shots at 100. For those still wanting 180s, Woodleigh makes a bonded spitzer/weldcore for the .270 that you can order through midway.

My only question would be, Why?

I've killed a number of moose with .270 150 gr. Ptn's with no trouble. Can't imagine a 180 would do any better and velocity would be low for the occasional long shot.

Those are some serious slugs, thanks for showing them to us. I already have some 160 gr Partitions on my loading shelf, just need to buy the 270 this year to shoot them in

Kind of reminds me of a 30-06 with an average weight bullet of 180 grains.

long ago i shot up a box of 170 grain federal,just for the brass.

The prairie dogs didn't like them.
The next day my shoulder was mad at me for shooting them.

They sure slap when they hit.

How fast can those big ones be driven?

I know 2900 is not hard with a 160g NPT, would you think 2700fps with the 180 is out of the question?

It's been a few years since I chronied, but I remember it in the 2700 fps range. I am using book load of RL22 from Barnes manual to load the 180s. They reported mid 2700 range with 24" barrel. I've never hunted anything with them as like the other poster mentioned have always been happy with 150s, but may try them on some pigs this spring.

2700 is about the limit. Too much bearing surface on those long torpedoes. Runs pressures up.

Why a 180 in a 270? No real need, but how much of our rifle and load tinkering is really necessary? Just for fun.

I've loaded the 180 Barnes .277 backward (at about 2500) and had a flat nose solid. The jackets are real thick. No practical application for them but it was a fun experiment.

Hey, in the old days before you could buy FMJ bullets in 243 caliber, I loaded regular cup and core bullets backwards in the cases so I could hunt turkeys with 'em. Worked fine. I just loaded them down a bit so it didn't do too much damage to the bird. South Dakota allowed rifles for turkeys then, don't know about now.
