This should also include the 200grn XTP I guess since the bullet's seem to have the same profile from the shoulder forward.
Hornady's 6th edition show's 1.230 as the OAL for both bullet's, and at that length my dummy round's survive the plunk test in both my 1911 and my XDs, but do not drop free like the 230grn fmj's when I turn the barrel's up to remove them.
Do I need to reduce the OAL and thereby reduce the powder charge or am I good to go.
Thanks in advance, Byron.

Anyone? I assumed that since Hornady used a 1911 as the test platform, that I would be good to go. Yes, no, maybe so?

I had the same problem...the XTP bullets, especially 230 grain, wouldn't seat out to 1.230 as specified in Hornady's 8th Edition in either my Kahr Auto-Ordnance 1911 nor my Ruger SR1911, so I seated them to 1.200 and reduced HS-6 loads from 8.0 grains to 7.7 to give me the same velocity (850 fps range). The 230 grain bullets seated to 1.230" chambered fine in my Sig 220.

Good luck!

Thank you. That helps a lot! HS-6 is one of the powders I have on hand and was going to try as a matter of fact.
The 230's are worse it seems, the 200's just barely hanging up when I tried my dummy round. Hmmm.....

I replaced the barrel for the AO 1911 and the new one accepts the XTP bullet at 1.230 just fine. (Not another AO barrel, but an aftermarket.) I called Hornady about it--this was a year or so ago--and they acknowledged some barrels are just cut with less leade than others. I'm a little disappointed that the bullet has to be seated a little deeper for the Ruger 1911, but I didn't want to put in an aftermarket barrel for it, and suspected getting another barrel from Ruger might take a while.

Ive reloaded for the .45 ACP for many years, like over 40 of them. I've never had that problem with any bullet.
While I have yet to use the 230 gr. XTP, I've used the 200 gr. version alot. I load them at 1.24 inches as their data suggests.
These work in my Series 70/Mk.4 Colt, my Kimber Custom Target, and my SIG 220.
What some have trouble with is not removing enough of the case belling with a proper taper crimp. Simply measure some factory ammo at the case mouth and duplicate that. Even a bit less works well. E

I'm loading them at 1.25" in a Glock 21.

No issues at that length. Never bothered to figure out what OAL would hit the lands.

Good thoughts. With the barrels I had a little trouble with, layout die clearly showed that that the shoulder of the bullet was contacting the lands. When Hornady acknowledged that this was a possiblity with some chambers and suggested to back off by a 1/2 grain or so and seat the bullets slightly deeper, but not with an overall length of whatever they suggested at the time, problem seemed easily solved.

Thanks to all for your help! My brass is right on at .898 and the outside dia. of the case at the case mouth with a bullet seated is .470. I did try tightening my die down a little to see if I could reduce the case mouth dia. a wee bit, but it made no difference and I was a little concerned about going any farther. Decided to go ahead and seat the bullet a bit deeper and at 1.225 I get a good plunk test and the cartridge falls free when I invert the barrels.

I have had trouble with the 200gr XTP at the recommended OAL, not in the pistol, but in the magazines. This is with a Taurus 1911, but had the same problem with a Wilson Combat mag. Seemed to be "hanging" in the mag as I was loading it, didn't even try to see if they would feed, as I would have had to force them into the mag. These were new magazines, by the way. I backed off on OAL, and problem went away. Hoping to try some 230gr XTP's soon.
