I think it would be pretty hard to beat a 3-4" barreled K or L frame Smith. Pick your individual flavor from there but my preference is the round butt, full lug barrels.

Reliabke, reasonably compact for carry yet enough weight, size and grip length to get a good handle on.

Every K and L frame I have owned has been 100% reliable, has fit my hand well and shot as good as I was capable of.

This is my current favorite as to my way of thinking 7 rounds of .357 in a 18.5oz L-frame is a nice CCW/ Woods packer. It's soon to get a set of NightGuard sights and checkered Ahrends grips.

I don't know.

They look like the cocobolo grips on the Ahrends webpage.

http://www.ahrendsgripsusa.com/tactical.htm

I bought them at a local gun shop that sells Ahrend's grips.

Yep, I'd go with what cops around the entire country carried for about 50 years or more. .38 +P or .357, take your pick.

If I had to name just one it would be the S&W Model 19 in 4" flavor.

Original Charter Arms Bulldog in .44 SPL or a similar model Taurus in the same caliber. No flies on my Model 58 with a 210 gr at 1000 or 1100 fps either.

S&W 5" N Frame Model 24 in .44 special. If it was good enough for Skeeter Skelton & Elmer Keith, its dang sure good enough for me.

Second Choice would be my S&W Model 19 in 357mag. Mine has a 3" barrel, adjustable sights, & a round butt grip frame.

That CS-1 686 I once had, fit the bill to perfection. 4" round butt, .1" front sight, all black, no inserts or outlines on the rear. Just right. Nothing better. I used Pachmayr Compacs on it, it fit my hand like it belonged there.

I am utterly astonished that no one has yet mentioned the Smith 625.

Mallard Addict,

What is that thing? It looks like a NightGuard that lost its NightGuard.

I'm a fan of moon clips. Either a 625 or 610 with 4" barrel. Perfect would be a 310 Nightguard, but with a 4" barrel rather than the 2 3/4".

I've grown to love my 310 NG.

Still don't have a 610.
