And was any of the bullets recovered? Results? I'm a big fan of the Swift A-Frame, but have yet to try out the Swift Scirocco bullets. I wouldn't mind using the 165 grain bullets in my 300 Winnie for sheep and moose hunting this fall.

Bear,

I've killed elk and deer with the Scirocco.

Killed the elk with a 180 out of my 300RUM @ 448 yards. The deer were with 150's in 7mm, at relatively close range. They have been very accurate out of both my 300RUM, 300 WIn and also 7STW.

Here are pics of the 180 that we dug out of my elk :

Shot was 1/4 towards me, hit the bull just behind the shoulder, we dug the bullet out just under the hide in front of the off side rear leg. It went through a lot of elk. MV was 3350, impact velocity was obviously under 3000, probably around 2500 or so.

It is the only one I have ever recovered.

Tony

PS : I should add that I also shoot the 165 Scirocco out of my 300Win. I use H4831 and get around 3200mv. Very accurate.

i have shot alot of them in 150 GR set up from my 7mm RUM with a max load of R25, never had one stop on bear, deer, elk. Last years second bear was shot at 435 yds 1/4ing away and i ran the bullet up in the shoulder crease, it broke the on side shoulder, blew up the spine and dislocated the off side shoulder then kept going into the dirt. result was one quickly dead bear, only true bang flop i have seen on a bear

While not in the same league as all of you are talking. I have used the 90 gr out of a 6mm on a few whitetails and have yet to recover a bullet, wether shot throught the shoulders or the boiler room. I like them very well.

I have taken two fairly large elk with the 180 grain Scirroco in my .300 Wby--one at 157 yds and the other at 179 yds. Both were shot twice through the ribs boadside and neither went more than a few steps bfore collapsing. Inside the chest cavity, it was lung soup. None of the bullets were recovered as all penetrated completely, breaking ribs both entering and leaving.

I have taken a couple of feral hogs with the 90 grain
Scirocco in a .243 and both were one-shot kills (neck shots that smashed the spine). One of those bullets was recovered and weighed approximately 78 grains after it was cleaned up.

I like them so far...

i took them to africa and shot a 300 win mag. i killed 13 critters with different sucess. most were good performance. i shot a gemsbok at 100 yds right on the shoulder and it was an obvious hit and we waited a few for it to fall over. then i shot it again in the neck and it fell, long story short the bullet blew up and never went into the vitals, same with red hartebeest. i still use them on deer but will never use them on anything bigger. trophy bonded bear claws my ph said were his favorite bullet and i shoot a bunch of them also and like them. shooting critters from duikers to kudu is a big spread, i would go with a better bullet if i had it to do again, stick with the a frames it they work for you.

I shot 4 whitetails this season with 180 gr. Sciroccos in a 300 RUM. Shots were from 15 yds. to 160 yds.
I recovered 1 bullet on a quartering towards shot in the just in front of the offside ham. The bullet struck a rib on entry and traveled through the gut pile. It weighed 142 grns. and looked much like the one posted above but more intact.
I use Sciroccos because I don't expect them to ever blow up on game at ultra mag velocities even on close shots and their expansion is just what I want for whitetails.

How do the the Sciroccos compare to the Accubond. They seem like they should perform similar on game. Any thoughts?

Montana Sam,
the accubond is a similar design I have no firsthand experience with but if Sciroccos weren't available they would be my next choice as long as my rifle liked them.
Swift Bullet Co. only makes 2 products, the Scirocco and the A-frame. I think if you load up for whitetails with a Scirocco or Accubond, and Partitions or A-frames for bigger critters, you will be pretty well equipped.

Feel free to correct me here...but I think one difference in the Accubonds and Sciraccos is that Sciraccos have a pure copper jacket and slimmer lead core resulting in a longer bullet and higher BC. Other than that I can not attest to performance on game...yet! Accuraccy...they both shoot amazingly tight groups in my Steyr SBS 7MMRM as do most all bullets!

Bear,

I posted this over on accurate reloading, but it seems to fit here and address several of the questions contained herein.

I shoot a .300 Winchester Magnum and my load with the 180 grain Swift Scirocco chronographs an average of 3,162 fps. My load with the 200 grain Nosler Accubond chronographs an average of 3,038 fps

With that said, I have shot or witnessed shot with the Swift Scirocco, 180 grain out of .300 Win Mags:

1 cow elk - lasered at 608 yards
1 cow elk - estimated at 400 yards
1 spike bull elk - estimated 150 yards
1 6 point bull elk - estimated 40 yards
1 cow elk - lasered 273 yards

I have shot with the 200 grain Accubond, or seen shot with the 180 grain Accubond:

1 5x5 bull elk - estimated 70 yards
1 cow elk - estimated 475 yards
1 cow elk - estimated 75 yards
1 4x4 Mule deer buck - estimated 125 yards
1 5x5 bull elk - estimated 30 yards
1 cow elk - estimated 150 yards

I did not notice any real world difference that the bullet made in the demise of any of these critters. None of them made it 50 yards before expiring, with most of them going down on the spot (3 out of 5 Scirocco kills and 3 out of 6 Accubond kills).

As far as recovered bullets go the advertising holds true. Nosler retains 50-60% and looks very similar to an expanded partition while the Swifts retain 70+% and have a slightly larger expanded profile.

A lot has been said about accuracy, or lack therof for the Scirocco. Has not been my experience. Once I refined my load for both bullets I fired five three shot groups to get a good average. Subsequently I have continued to keep track of group sizes and for a running average here is what I have at 100 yards

Scirocco - .886"
Accubond - 1.12"

I have been shooting the 200 grain Accubond since they came out, but with the new Scirocco II coming on line and the experience I have had with them in the past I am going to try a few more "real world" elk experiences with them. I will attempt to post some pics of the bullet we pulled out of the cow elk that was shot at 608 yards (estimated velocity of 2,300 fps)

We have recovered at least one other one. I will see if I can lay my hands on it and take a pic.

150 grain Scirocco's out of my 7 mag performed excellent on two mule deer. One went thru both shoulders, dropped the buck instantly, the other was a boilerroom shot. No recovered bullet in either case. Based on what I expect from a bullet, I have always thought the Scirocco is the best of the bonded plastic tip bullets. Retains 90% of it's weight, yet mushrooms very well, expending most or more of it's energy "within" the animal. Not a bad characteristic in my book. I'm not out to kill tree trunks.

I shot 8 or 9 whitetails with the 150 Scirocco out of my 7.21 Tomahawk,MV of 3300, Ranges from 280 yds to 50 yds, only one ever took a step... I recovered 2 boolits, one was a hard quartering shot and the other was walking right at me, they both looked like the pic in the other post and retained 83-84%... I like them for deer but switched to TSX's for Elk... YMMV I think you would be hard-pressed to find a better Deer boolit when MV is above 3000....
