That's just the freight charges, not including fuel cost. Plus, no offense, but you Oregonians can't even pump your own gas. There's got to be a charge for that too.
It is irrelevant what you think. What matters is the TRUTH.

Beretta and estacado are on the right track. Wholesale prices at the rack change every evening at 6:00pm except for the weekend. Pricing all depends on what the NYMEX numbers do that day. It can change anywhere from 0 to +/-15cts/gallon on any given day. Depending on how long it takes the retailer to sell his inventory dictates how much and when his retail price changes. Also, since there is a 2.5-3% fee for credit cards, this adds an additional 7-10cts/gallon that goes straight off the top to visa/mc before any profit can be calculated. It's a game of pennies.....high volume/low margin. It's not rocket science. What we see here is that most retailers really dont set their own price. The price is set in a community by the retail giants and the rest have to match the price regardless of whether they have higher priced gas in their tanks or not. Thus the mom and pop suffer. The (not so) funny part is that people will drive all across down to save 3 cents per gallon. So that is usually less than 50 cents total. yet they use probably a dollars worth of gas doing it! Happens all the time. All the while, they bitch an moan about the price of gas. If you want to add another level of complexity to it, if the station is branded, they have to sell that brand in most cases. However, that brand may not have any gas available at the local terminal or it may be 1 to 8 cents higher per gallon. He sees this a lot with diesel, especially spring and fall as we are a farming community. Availability of diesel can be a real tough deal.
What you do today is important, you are trading a day in the rest of your life for it.

In S.E. Wis. it is 3.96 per gal. For diesel it is 4 bucks.

I have a friend that owns a station and garage. There are times when prices are spiking that what he grossed off his last tank won't pay for the next delivery, so he's left to pull out of his pocket until hopefully it levels out and be can catch up! All the while the credit card companies are making more per gallon than the station!
I am free only because thousands of brave Americans have given their lives' for me.

Two days ago, reg unleaded was $3.28/gal. Diesel was $3.69. Went into town this afternoon and reg was $3.39 and Diesel was $3.99 at one place and $3.89 at another. I live twelve miles from a refinery. Ed
