A friend bought a new Savage in 6.5-284. He is having a really hard time extracting the cases after firing. I asked to see a case and it is obvious there is a burr in the chamber. Is this something a guy can polish out somehow, or does it require a trip to a gunsmith?

I only know it is there because of the deep scratch on the brass. Haven't seen the gun in person. Sorry for the crappy pic, but you can see the shiney scratch on the body of the case.

I have had two brand new high end factory firearms make it out of inspections and into my home with horribly rough chambers. In my cases, a slightly undersized cleaning brush wrapped with a cleaning patch which had been saturated in Valve Polishing compound or Firelapping compound and the other end or a short piece of takedown cleaning rod stuffed into a Drill motor did the trick. Made the chamber nice and slick. Go slowly and cautiously so as to not made the chamber larger or out of round.

BEST solution, though, is to simply have the barrel re chambered to 264 WinMag! Still the king and best of the 6.5 cartridges.

Is ring lapping compound too harsh? Brand new gun, I am sure he wants to keep it as is.

I had this issue on a factory remington. Took it to my gunsmith, he pulled out his reamer and gave it a couple of turns in the chamber by hand. Could feel a couple of burrs break off. Problem solved

I don't call them burrs , i call them scratches and you can't really ever polish them out . The only solution is to cut off the chamber re-cut the tenon and re-chamber. You gunsmith knows this .

If it's new why not contact Savage directly regarding the problem?

You want to polish off raised metal at the edges, not remove metal overall. I do this by splitting a dowel and inserting 400 grit paper. Chuck in a variable speed drill and proceed until the problem goes away, shouldn't take much. Hard to hurt the chamber without making an effort with 400 grit.

Careful though. Chambers aren't meant to be TOO polished; it'll increase thrust against the bolt face.

My 300 WM had burrs at the chamber mouth causing difficult extraction and leaving scratches. Some bronze brush work, and then a bit of 600-grit paper on my fingertip fixed it. Easy does it.

Drew, I had the same exact issue with a .300WSM Savage and the burr was so bad that I felt the chamber needed to be re-cut.
I had Earl Hickman from your neck of the woods cut me a new chamber and face the breech.
He did spectacular work for small money and he did it quick.
He's my 'smith of choice and I recently had him chamber and thread nutless a Rock for my latest Savage. Also great work for small money.
