I'm considering see through a on my bdl .222 so I can utilize the irons

If I were limited to one rife it would be no contest a fast twist 22-250 vanilla or ai. My particular rifle shoots 40 grain vmax's to 55 horn sp's to 53 tsx's to 75 amax's to 62 ttsx's sub moa at 100. I have only shot the 40s and 55s in ff loads and not past 200 though. The only bullet I have tried that I could not get to shoot in my rifle is the 75 swift

Was it just me on the stock purse? I don't see needing that damn thing to carry around cell phone batteries, lunch, drop chart, wrenches etc...

The question was brought up about how these rifles shoot light bullets.
Here's a couple light bullet groups shot with my Pops' 220 Swift. Ruger 77 tang safety, 9 twist Montana Rifleman barrel (hey it was 80 bucks). 8x Leupold. About 9 lbs all up.

Group on the left is 3 40 grain Ballistic Tips at around 4200 fps.
Group on right is 3 52 grain Sierra HPBTS at 3850. First load tried with that bullet.
This rifle won't shoot like this everytime, but often enough to make it deadly. Will do similar with 75 Amaxs.

For me the groups aren't important, what matters is to have a useable rifle that is first and foremost practical for field use. That means a portable rifle (both length and weight wise), balanced to be able to shoot in field positions, not overscoped, and that has the ability to shoot long bullets far or light bullets fast for fun. If put together correctly, it will shoot, pretty much regardless of chambering or twist. Really specialized rifles get left home, while rifles that can do it all get packed.

To be perfectly honest, I've pretty well abandoned the large capacity 22s these days, and went to the 6mms. The ability to shoot light bullets is still there, but the number of high BC bullets available, as well as numerous hunting bullets, makes it a better mousetrap, IMO. I am quite happy with the 223 AI as an upper case capacity limit for my 22 caliber pursuits.

Nah, I agree. I think you coined a new term there too.

That's a 25". If doing it over again, Pops said he would hack a couple inches off.

However, I do admit to using a Beartooth stock guard that holds 6 rounds, so I can grab and go, beings Wi frowns on a magazine full in the truck....

Do it! That will be sweet. What are you building it on? Might need a 3" magazine with the longer bullets.

700, I have some cases with 75gr Amax in them that work through the action.

That said, I anticipate shooting more 'hunting' bullets.

I agree with praire_goat. I'm not real concerned with groups, I just like to hit stuff.

Seriously, you made a claim that even fast twist barrels shoot fine with lighter bullets. I'm sure that is why the barrel makers only produce fast twist tubes. smile There is a reason that everyone doesn't order the fastest twist barrel possible when they build a rifle --- there are drawbacks that COULD exist and it is probably fair to be up front with shooters about those.

maybe you could expound on these 'drawbacks that COULD exist'

Guns don't kill people, drivers with cell phones kill people.
