Sorry for taking the BTE off track for a moment......
BD, I've been approached by a few locals here to come up with a cartridge and I thought I would seek your wise council. Michigan is in the act of passing a law to modify what is legal in it's "shotgun only" zone to include what they describe as a "straight walled brass case, minmum of .35 caliber, with a maximum case length of 1.8". My first two candidates are a .375 Win. and a .444 Marlin. The Winchester case is 2.02 to begin with...so shortening loses less capacity than shortening the 2.16 Marlin case. Right now I have shortened 10 of the win cases and am ready to load them with a 225gr speer spire pt. I have laying around. In playing with a dummy round I think I can seat the bullet out and regain .150 of the .220 in lost case length. Going to fire these out of a Ruger #3 so chambered and see how they act with the extra freebore. What say you? Think I am on the right track? 460 S&W Ruger NO 1's oughta be well sought after now.

Travis Thats what I did bought a 44 Mag Marlin. The 77/44 will probably be popular also.

Have one SS rifle, a 77/44. Shoot paper patched 300 gr FNFB swagged pure lead at +\- 1600 fps. Functional equivalent of the old factory .45-70 sorta. Kills chitt deader'n phouc, on the spot. 10 times out of 10 it will put 3 in a wad between .85" and 1.25" at 100 yards. With a red dot sight. It also makes armoured [bleep] explode.

One of the reasons I'm trying to go for max case length is we are in open farm country and trying to stretch the range as much as possible. If I can get something that will shoot to 250 yds with dots I'd be outside the realm of muzzle loaders and thats the whole object. No doubt lots of people will opt for the .44 repeaters. Thanks for the input....I will follow up with the results.
