That looks like a great bullet. I'm going to get some of those and try them on elk! Thanks for posting that.

a SD of .261!!!!!!! Wow, you will get lengthwise exits on elk with that torpedo. That bullet is as close as you can come to making a 30-06 a stopping gun. Pretty cool. However, will an 06's with a standard rate of twist even shoot this thing??

Slight correction: the SD is .361. Poot Peak probably just made a typo.

Most .30-06 rifles have a 1-10 inch twist. Woodleigh lists the length of the 240 gr PP as 1.428 inches. (The length is given in their brochure.)

Here's the twist rate needed as calculated by the Greenhill formula:

150 X D^2/L = Twist

Where:
D = bullet diameter in inches
L= bullet length in inches
150 = a constant

150 x .308^2 / 1.428 = 9.9647 twist

That's pretty close to the standard 1-10" twist. I'm not an expert on twist rates. I have read where the Greenhill formula is considered to be conservative (ie: it estimates a faster twist than may be needed). I think the standard 1-10 inch will probably work fine with the 240 gr PP.

Here's some info I found on twist rates:
http://www.loadammo.com/Topics/July01.htm

Also, here's a pic from the other thread (the link I gave above) showing some actual results for the 240 gr PP in the 30-06:

Does anybody know where I can order some of these? I checked Midway and they don't have these listed. Maybe I'll just have to wait a couple months?

Ted,

They are designed for the standard 1:10 twist used in the 30-06.

Awesome looking projectile! I just wish I had plans to hunt something big enough this year to try them out on.

They look similar to the old 250 gr Barnes soft point, but with a slightly more pointed nose.

This bullet has a bonded core. It will be interesting to see how they perform on game at '06 velocities. The Barnes 250 would not open up unless you hit heavy bone or travelled through a LOT of muscle.

I guess that leaves me wondering why? What's the point? All those nice bullets between 150 and 200 grains, and you got to have one 20% heavier and 10% slower? Lots of you guys poo-poo velocity, and trying to attain that extra 200fps, but I never see that same oppositon when there is a post regarding bullets that are way out of "standard for caliber" wt. Shooting bullets this wt requires different twist rates normally. And why not just shoot a .338, at even a nominal .338 velocity it would outpace this bullet in the 30-06 by 500fps.

Im sorry, just like so many of you don't get my "need for speed" I can tell you I don't get the fascination with such heavy for caliber bullets...not to be confused with heavy bullets...but rather heavy for caliber ultra slow bullets just hold no fascination for me.

One thing to keep in mind is that this is an international forum. Shooters in some other countries may not have access to multiple rifles and calibers due to gun control/licensing laws. South Africa is a good example. Sometimes "ya just got to use what you've got" so to speak.

IMHO, the perfect use for this bullet would be for hunting plains game in the southern African bushveld where shots are usually relatively close (say 50 to 150 yards). If I was going to shoot an Eland with the .30-06 then this is the bullet I would use.

And what advantage does it give with short shots over 165s and 180s?

I mean you can shoot 300grainers at 2000fps that don't expand at all, and get fabulous penetration! What do you gain with shooting clean through plains type game and expending the energy in the dirt 100 yards past the target?

Well, it depends if you are loading with WW760 or H450.

I noticed on the pic of the box there that it says recommended for 1900-2400fps. I think the RUM might push 'em a bit faster than intended at close range. I have never used any myself, so I don't know anything about their "typical" expansion rates and such. But golly, that to me is one purty bullet!

yukoner,

I do have to respect your attempt at being a smartass! I really do mean that. Being a smart ass is an art, underappreciated though it is, its still an art.

BUT I think you meant W760 or H414.

.280 i agree with you. i think thats a good bullet, but i do not think a 30-06 will get the speed needed for that bad boy. hell, i would like to get more velocity with 180's in my 30-06 but its not the fastes out there. i like 180's MAYBE 200's in 30-06, other than that there to slow! that thing would drop like a rock out past 150-200!

Threre is a definate cultural divide amongst hunters (and cops too) about penetration of bullets and how much is needed. Im not flaming the penetration crowd, but rather defending my position which is of the "energy transfer" point of view. I started studying this debate when I was a cop. I read Even Marshall's book Hangun Stopping Power. It consistently rated bullets that expanded well on target and didn't always pass clean through as the best, by percentage of one shot stops in actual shootings. I don't have time to go in to all the parameters of the study, but it seemed to my way of thinking the best way to make the determination by using real world data, not by using "fabricated" ballistic gelitan data from a lab. MANY cops who came up during the switch over from the old school revlover era, to the semi auto era have experience with the 9mm. This is a reltively impotent handgun as is the .38spl. I know they both have served well, but face it they are impotent killing machines...good wounding, but impotent killers. Many cops thought to compensate they needed heavy bullets...the 147s Which consitetnly pass through most all human targes. But the real world data suggest, by overwhelming percentages, that the speedy little 115s in +P loads that expend well are much better in the real world.

To me perfect bullet performance is a well constructed bullet shot fast that impacts the target, expands rapidly, but doest fragment, and passes all the way thourgh the vitals but expends all its energy in the target with none left to punch out the opposite side hide. Or just enough to barely punch out, with little energy left after exit. Obviously its difficult to have a bullet that will do this from all angles and on all sized game, leading some to opt for the bullet that will always, no matter what angle give full penetration. But I can tell you, atleast on the non-extreme shots such as full broadside, that the heavier bullets only make sure to pass thourgh, and the energy transfer is much less. To me this is not the optimal terminal performance. JMO.

I put no faith or value in Evan Marshall's so called study of acctual shootings, because there is no rhime or reason as to which ones are included vs. which ones are ignored. Read Dr. Martin Fackler's work and then make up your mind. Mr. Fackler does not agree with Evan Marshl's so called study and explains why it is invalid.Marshall does not differenciate between determined attackers and those's that fall down with minor wouulds. Determined attackers do not stop untill they are stopped.
