My gawd, this thread has turned serious!

That number 3 is handy looking. Neat rig for a boy. Well done.

But you'll happily stick a 55 grain varmint Hornady in a deer's ribs?

No bears and not much sign they are in there this year. Going to try another spot next weekend.

Was kind of strange, found a dead yearling cow elk and a dead domestic cow and neither had been ate on by anything besides birds.

elk, We have shot the 160 Serria hpbt, quite a bit.. I have killed antelope, coyotes, mulies, elk, and a moose with them.. For bigger game I prefer the Nosler part.. The moose took one in the neck with frontal shot, knocked her down, but she got back up, a hit in the ribs dropped her.. The elk also a cow, took a hit though the lungs at about 200 yards.. The bullet exited. She maybe ran or rolled down a hill for 100 yards.. Tremendous blood trail.. I would limit their use to deer, antelope or coyotes.. They worked on the elk and moose, but to me they are not the best for that use..
I still need to work up a 53 grain tsx load for it. But to do that I'd need to find some 53 tsx's.......
BGG,

I have some Federal Premium factory 53 tsx .223 ammo I'd part with for what I have in them plus shipping. They were not cheap but I did buy them before this latest round of craziness.

That said, I wouldn't hesitate to use the Hornady bullets that Ingwe recommends. That's a much less expensive route and it looks like the boy already has his rig dialed in for those.

Ya, it was strange. They both were on the same ridge within a 1/4 mile of each other. Guessing lightning?

Really, hummm could be,but being 1/4 mile apart sounds like a little far apart for lightning,it could be possible though.

They have had some pretty good thunderstorms up there this month. Lots of splintered trees on the old burn scar.

elk, if I had a good broadside shot.. Not a problem. I just remembered shooting a badger one morning while hunting antelope and coyotes.. I had a 7mm Wea. and the 160's were loaded to 3250fps. The badger poked his head out of a hole about 100 yards away.. I centered him looking at me and the bullet didn't exit the back of his head as near as I could tell.. Looked like he had swallowed a bomb.. I guess if I were going on a hunt for big bear and paying big bucks, no.. If I were hunting bear on my own here in Wy. or in the west, I would use them with the knowledge that unless I had a good lung shot, I would pass...
