7, I have a Lefever 16 ga. double with a silvery finish, got at a pawn shop several years ago just because it looks so cool. I have shot it some, and I stockpiled some ammo when I could get it at K-Mart in Reno, NV. They used to get a bunch of 6s and 8s in each September for dove season. I love the old thing, it is nothing fancy but it is the only side x side I own. I have 2 stackbarrel guns, one each in 12 and 20 ga.

See www.16ga.com - it's a group of dedicated 16 ga users and a good resource for the few fans of the 16 who understand it's advantages. It's a wonderful gauge. I have owned several, an Ithaca flues, a M12 pump and my current favourite, a Browning Citori white lightning. Nothing better for long walks after prairie grouse and huns. Combines the range of a 12 and carrys like a 20. Patterns much better than a 3" 20 gauge. Of course anything worthwhile is a bit more trouble... don't wait until the night before a hunt to try and find shells!

My Browning Sweet Sixteen is my favorite shotgun.

16's are all I own, have been shooting same for
45yrs. all upland birds ,ducks and geese have fallen to
my 16 gauge shot guns. Have tried 12's but end up
trading them off for something else. If in europe
would find the 16 in much more favour. Good
hunting with your 16's . Northcountry

Ithaca 37 with Polychoke
Remington 11
Savage/Fox side by side
Stevens 520

They are all in 16 gauge and make meat. They are great little guns and I too stocked up whenever I found the shells on sale at K-mart. During Dove season I used to get them for $3 a box. Still shooting those ones up.

Ithaca NID special order field grade. Straight stocked beautiful wood, double triggers, ejectors, IC/Mod 26" barrels restored by Doug Turnbull.....
I love it. I reload 16 so availability isn't as big a problem. I do tend to stockpile factory loads though!

7,
Just had my first hunting season with the 16 ga, an older 870 and a Savage/Fox. Certainly pleasant to shoot. Haven't had problems finding factory loads in 6s and 7 1/2s.

1950 vintage Sweet Sixteen with factory "cylinder" choke (barrel marked with 3 stars). Also have a full choke barrel for it.
L.C. Smith and I have a line on a nearly un-used 870 that I might pick up just because.

I like an ounce of 8's for anything from preserve pheasants on down. Use 6's or maybe 7-1/2's on wild pheasant with pointing dogs. Flushing dogs and waterfowl the 12ga gets dragged along.

The 16 is my favorite bird gun. I have a Citori, a Sweet Sixteen {Jap} and a Winchester 24. I may have to have a 4th because we just got a couple of the CZ doubles into the shop and they are N-I-C-E! Hell, if I wasn't such a gun snob I'd even buy a H&R single shot with the black stocks/nickeled receiver in 16 to shoot squirrels with. I may get it anyway and just not tell anybody....

I have several Ithaca model 37 16's. Favorite gauge and gun for upland. I'm partial to the older 37's with the "ringtail" or "corn cob" forends. Others are always amazed at the "performance" compared with their 12 gauges. Of course that probably has at least as much to do with the number of shells I put through them.

I'll join you in your deviant behavior this fall. I picked up two this year,a Sweet 16 28" VR modified from the 50's and a Winchester 1200 with improved cylinder and modified barrels. I noticed that Polywad and Eley sell some interesting shells if they are hard to find locally. http://www.polywad-shotgun-shells.com/16%2Dgauge%2Dshotshells/

A Ithaca M37, Lefever Nitro Special, and a Philly Fox
A Grade that was a gift from a friend who introduced
me to doubles and the 16. I grew up hunting grouse
with a single shot 12ga, so when I got the Beretta
a390 I thought it was the greatest thing in the world.
Havent used a 12 since I got my first 16. There is nothing
like a walk in the fall woods with a slim 16 over your arm.

One 16.
An old win 1897 pump. Full choke, exposed hammer, great trigger.
It was manufactured in 1900. Handed down to me by my late elk hunting mentor.
I like to use it to run n gun for Rio's. Got a real nice old tom this season with a swarm of 6's from that old 97'. BT53

Remington Sportsman 16 currently sporting a 26" Imp.Cyl. barrel.

Would very much like to have (later on) a Lefever Nitro or an L.C. Smith sxs 16, to go with the pair of sxs that I inherited from my grandfather (a Lefever Nitro 12 and an L.C. Smith 20).

I have a 1937 Fox Sterlingworth sxs and a 1951 Winchester 24 sxs, both original guns and 16 ga.. I,too, have bought the Remington promo 16 ga. shells on sale in the Fall in K Mart. I don't small game hunt much anymore so I'm thinking of selling the Win. 24. Any 16 makes the ideal upland gun.

Guess I'm destined to become one. Just bought a Winchester model 12 Tournament Grade in 16 guage. Solid rib and a black diamond stock. It has a corn cob fore end which I am convinced is a replacement. I'm looking for a proper fore end to replace the replacement with.

I use a sweet 16 on doves and a 1942 model 12 as my beater grouse and woodcock gun. Don Zutz used to say that a 16 gauge model 12 handles like a British Game gun and I believe he was right!

KyWindageII, I don't know Don Z or anything about British guns ('Well frogs cannot speak of oceans.') but I guess he liked Model 12's. I got it because I have Trap models in 12 gauge M97, 20 gauge M12, and a M42. It'll feel right at home with the other straight stocked pump guns.

Rick Bin, my uncle's old ribbed Sweet Sixteen was the most enjoyable shotgun I've ever taken afield. It was simply a joy to handle and shoot.

For my uses, the 16 gauge is tops!

I have one 16ga, a side-by-side. I don't find ammunition avaialbility an issue, because it's a flinter. It's a bit over 7 pounds, so I can feed it anything from 1/2oz of #8 for pests to 1-3/8oz of #2 Bismuth for geese. Love the versatility.

Joel

p.s. - I'm still working on steel loads - likely wind up with 1-1/4oz over 3-1/2 - 3-3/4dr. That's got some noticable recoil.

Any body have any experience with Polywads Vintager, 16ga, 2 1/2" shells? They're light, low pressure loads for old shotguns with 2 1/2" chambers.

Eldorado, if you ask this question over at the DoublegunsBBS forum on www.Gunshop.com, you will get a quick answer, I'm sure. Lots of short-chambered 16s in use by people who post there. Wait a bit; the forum was down for service when I tried earlier today.

An article that I read recently stated the short chamber really isn't a problem as far as pressure goes. The almost new NEF I just looked at had a 2 1/2" chamber.

I'm 46 and have two, a model 12 and just picked up a beautiful Sweet Sixteen (spotless, round knob, vent rib, mod. choke). I haven't carried the A-5 afield yet, but a few rounds of Clays reminded me of my daddy's old A-5 12 gauge that he used for everything from squirrels to ducks.....I don't think he ever knew the choke). That action bring back good memories. I've never mastered the pump, but it's a cool vintage slider.

I have a 1941 vintage M12 and a 1950 vintage Ithaca 37...

Steelhead..If you're looking for a shooter M12 16 gauge, I know where there's one for $275 with a solid rib...

Somebody put a POS trap style aftermarket buttstock on it, but if you bought it right and replaced the stock with a more proper one, it would make a nice shooter..

Had not thought of it that way Kid but I am a Mac Computer guy also...

My LC Smith now wear's a custom fit straight grip English walnut by Wenig Custom Gunstocks. Made the trip a couple weeks ago with my Dad. Wonderful people at Wenig's. Great experience all around.

Just gotta get busy with the finishing on it.

I don't shoot 16 ga anymore but I have used Polywad Vintagers in 12 ga. Good, low recoil and low pressure loads.

I also like Polywad's Doublewide shell. It is a low pressure load that is intended to give a pattern at least twice as wide as a non-spreader shell, and it does. I have a 12 ga that is bored .044 x .040, and the Doublewides turn it into a skeet gun. No. 8 shot only in the DW, but what else do you want for woods quail, woodcock, or ruffed grouse?

16 ga is my favorite, as well as my Dad's favorite. He's got a pair of SxS 16's. I'm alternating between a 60's era Ithaca 37 and a 20's era Browning A5, both in 16. Got a limit of pheasants here in NE late last year with the Ithaca, and nailed a rabbit late last year with the A5. [Linked Image] [Linked Image]

Here's mine and a big Rio tom I took with it last spring. Called him into about 25 yards and rolled him with a load of 6's.

It's an old Win 1897 made in 1900 and gifted to me by my late elk hunting mentor.

Other than browning, who makes a nice 16 gauge over and under?

Anybody using one?

I use two 16 gauges, both inherited from my dad. One is a Model 12 full choke and the other is an A-5 also full choke. The A-5 fits me like it was custom made and I use it for pheasants, chukar and quail. Last Saturday I shot 8 pheasant, 9 chukar and 6 quail with it with one box of shells. These were club planted birds that held tight for my Brittany. If they were wild birds, I probably would have used three boxes and got half the birds. FYI - I am 49 years old.

P.S. I missed a shot at a running jack rabbit and cut loose with three wiffs at a crow.
