I found one in very little used condition with serial #40,xxx. It must be from the first batch chambered for then new .300Magnum cartridge. The gun looks like checkered Remington 721. The barrel rifling seems to have more turns per barrel length then most I have seen. The price is $300. Should I but it or not? I do not own a single rifle at this time.
PS. I have owned rifles in cals: .350, 9.3x62, and .375Magnum so recoil and blast aren't an issue.

I had one of these in .30-06 and it was great. It now belongs to one of my hunting friends, and it's his only CF rifle. If I found another at a reasonable price, I'd buy it.

Early 1960's sounds right with that serial number. The guys over at the Savage Collectors Forum can narrow it down for you. If you find a oval stamp with a letter and some numbers the letter will give you a year of manufacturer. A=1949, B=1950 and so on. They skipped "O" and "Q". The number(s) are not significant, they are assumed to be an inspectors mark.

I like the older 110's especially the ones with cut checkering. All the ones Ive had have been good shooters. If it is in nice shape $300 doesnt sound bad.

Its an old one......IF....you ever go to re barrel it...
the old ones are a bear to break the barrel nut loose..
Just take a Dremel & cut the nut & replace with a new one...
$300 is a real fair price...

My Uncle had a 110 Premier, with the high gloss blue and beautiful "roll over" combed stock. It was in the "at the time" newly introduced 7mm Rem. Mag. It was and still is a tack driver. My cousin still shoots it .

Buy it, clean the chit out of it and shoot that thing!!

Bolt parts are different, so modern aftermarket bolt parts don't fit those early 110's. If you want a switch-barrel might be worth finding a newer one, or switch to 7mag, plenty of those barrels around...still, it's a good deal if you want to stay with 300mag

Correct Jeff. The early 110s had a different bolt head/ejector setup and the bolt nose recessed into the barrel. The early version also had a large circular bulge on the barrel where the rear sight fit. The early rifles were very nice, just not easily rebarreled. I have one that was rebarreled to .25-06 that I will keep as is. There are other guns to barrel swap with.

The rifle is practically new so I do not have to worry about new barrel or spare parts.
I heard Savages were very accurate because the barrel nut keeps consistent pressure
on barrel-receiver coupling but have never had one of these rifles to see how they shoot. The reason I haven't bought it yet is because it is chambered for the .300WM cartridge.
