Loaded some of Woody's "Long Lance" PP bullets today as well as the 500gr Brooks mold ones Sharpsguy turned me onto. Woody I used your laod of 95gr KIK2F and I seated them a little deeper as we discussed. Hopefully accuracy won't be affected by the deeper seating:
Long Lance: .580 Compression, 450 seating depth
Brooks RN: .500 Compression, .350 seating depth.

The one in the middle is the 540gr mold the rifle came with. Very accurate but the long length at least in my rifle, makes it impractical for hunting as I find I need to wipe every second shot or the bullet won't seat in the chamber.
They seated very nicely and firm, so much so I might not crimp them:

Well, I hope this deeper seating works ok. Did you shoot yours at the deeper seating depth yet or are you still using the .250 seating?

Haven't shot any of the 100 or 105 gr loads yet but those are all .250 as well. Cooling down next week so have talked myself into swapping the base on the LL mould and pouring some flat base I'll go 3/8 seat on these when I load em.

A good range day. Took the bullets above, 500gr Long Lance, Brooks and one of the original 540grainers loaded by Bill FOUR years ago plus some 520gr "Buffalo Bullets" (grease) and of course my favorite PH 475gr greaser. I used 95gr of KIK2F for all loads seated deeper as I described above and with Norma and Starline brass. Note the Norma brass holds less capacity and I wanted to see if there was a discernible POI change, which I was unable to completely substantiate:

First shot out of the chute with the LL produced a perfect bullseye at 100 yards, followed by three Brooks (left 11 o'clock, 1" separation and slightly right above the number "10") and two PHs almost touching 1" above the bull:
[Linked Image]

Next group I moved out to 200 yards and fired two Buffalo bullets (two and ten O'clock respectively) followed by twoPHs one bullseye and at 4 O'clock and the one 540gr PP on the bull at 6'Oclock. I was pretty happy about that!
[Linked Image]

I left the above group uncovered and proceeded to fire two more Long Lances, two more Brooks'. As you can see they print a bit higher but that could also be me and target acquisition (that bull's tiny at 200!)

I still believe the Brook's prefer the stouter charge of 105gr as well as 100gr of KIK 1F which I happen to have a bunch of. I was very pleased though the deeper seating depth caused no degradation in accuracy and make for a more reliable hunting bullet in my rifle. Oh! I was also very diligent in blowing into the chamber after every shot and was able to fire at least four PP bullets, including that long 540grainer without issue. I did wipe after every shot group though. I'm going to load a bunch using the KIK 1F using 100gr for the Brooks and Long Lance again and get back to you guys. jorge

Guys I'm looking for a (gulp) leather buttstock shellholder but one that wraps around the back to keep it from sliding. I know there are a couple of makers out there but I've lost the link. Any info appreciated. jorge

Good shooting Jorge I'm liking what I see! wink I'm still amazed how these guns digest different charges and bullet weights and yet shoot to a similar POI at nominal ranges.I had the same results the day I intermixed my 520 gr Gov't,480 PH,your Brooks PP and Bill's PP that Bernie Rowls cut for me.I'll definitely go with the deeper seat,as I said before.385 is more to my comfort zone with the ruff and tumble late season hunting out here.

It's still the same story here with that flatnosed bullet in my 45-70. I just got in from the range and shot both the flatnose and my 507 grain round nosed paper patched bullet in both my 45-70 Roughrider and my 45-70 Business rifle. The flatnosed bullet shot O.K. at 100 and 150, but the wheels really came off at 410 and 504. This is exactly the same result I got with it before in a 45-70.

I have never tried it in a 45-110, and it is shooting up close for you guys. Maybe it will hold up at distance for you in the 45-110.

Damn Bill guess I've gotta get on the sticks at some longer range! Still hoping that extra push from the big guns might be the right medicine..we'll just hafta wait and see.

I have eleven 45-70 rounds still loaded with that bullet. I am going to pull the bullets and load them into some 45-110 cases, then try them in my 45-110 Business Rifle. I may be able to do it today, we'll see. That FN bullet will be a killer for sure if you can get it to shoot. It shoots to 150 as it is, but a Sharps ain't about up close. They really come in to their element at 300 and beyond if they are loaded correctly. I just don't want to handicap my rifle's capabilities because I like the way a bullet LOOKS rather than the way it shoots.

Well, I pulled the LL bullets from my 45-70 cases and loaded them into cases for the 45-110. Same story. They shoot at 100 and 150, suck at 300, and do better at 410. Don't shoot for crap on the 500 ram. They do shoot better in the 45-110 than the 45-70, but no way in hell I'm going to use them or go through this for the umpteenth time again. You boys knock yourselves out.

wow, that's interesting Bill! What powder & charge? As you saw, they seem to shoot fine at 100 & 200 for me with the 95gr of KIK 2F. In September I'll try them at 300 up at our place in PA.

jorge--90 grains of 1F. That is a load that I use with a 515 grain Bernie bullet in one of my hunting loads. Woody has the Bernie bullet.

Ok Bill thank you. Just loaded some 500gr Brooks and the Bernie bullet ( I think, it has a spitzer nose Woody sent them) and some of the 500gr hollow base with 100gr 1F seated to .500 (powder) and .350 seating for the bullet.
I'm also going to load a few deeper like I did above (Long Lance: .580 Compression, 450 seating depth
Brooks RN: .500 Compression, .350 seating depth. with 1F and see how they shoot. I have a LOT of 1F on hand so I hope it works!

I have 42 of the flat nose hollow base left so pressing on with swapping out the base config and pouring some with the flat base.Want to load these up on the stout side[100-105grs] equally for a side by side comparison and will shoot out to 300-400 as I'll be able to next week after some mowing to clear my shooting lane.

Jorge, I'm settling in on a .385 seat for all PP bullets with a
touch of tapered crimped which doesn't produce any paper rings for me either.

Bill, if these don't shoot at range I'll just shelf the mould, throw the leftovers in the pot and morph into Brooks or our "Bernie" bullet.Don't have any problems settling in on either of these excellent offerings as they shoot very well all the time in my gun.Only out a little time and BP but more experience to put under my belt but you warned me up front and knew all along I'd be messin with this!!! grin
