Can someone tell me what size the base screw is for a Savage rifle. One of the bases screw holes has some buggered up threads half way down, not allowing the screw to tighten firmly enough. I need to know what size and pitch of threads so I can run a tap down through the hole and clean up the threads.

If it is a blind hole you will need a bottom tap with 6-48 thread. If the screw hole is open all the way through then a taper or plug will work. Some of the larger Savage actions ( 338 Lapua ) etc use 8-40 screw size.

Is this the problem? Where the barrel threads prevent the screw from tightening? If so, you need to shorten the screw to get it to tighten and avoid buggering the barrel threads.
