Here is the last and final set of rules( until we adjust them again)
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Two catagories:
Catagory 1 Plains game is equal or over .275 caliber *AND* over 2500fpe

Catagory 2 Dangerous game is equal or over .375 caliber *AND* over 4000 fpe

Target entry deadline May first

Target A
2 shots standing with sticks at 75 yards
2 shots standing free hand no gun rest at 75 yards

Target B
2 shots standing free hand no gun rest at 50 yards
2 shots standing with sticks at 100 yards

8 shots total, 4 per target. Scoring will be with the smallest total distance measured from the aim points center with calipers to the center of each hole, then added together.

No time limit for the free hand shots
From the sticks the two shots should be done in under 1 minute at each distance.

Printing a 1" grid target of your choice from the website "my targets.com" on 8.5X11" sheet or similiar commercial made tagets are fine. You must submit the actual target with the holes not a photo copy of the target you shot.

There should be 8 total shots into two targets. 4 shots per target.

Either commercial two or three leg sticks or home made sticks. Must be used while standing only. The use of a rifles sling is allowed for the free hand shooting.

This info must be printed in readable fashion on each target face: "With Examples"

Date: March 14th 2006
Firearm: Winchetster
Cartridge: 338/06
Bullet weight: 210 grain partition
Scope or iron sights: 2.5-8 leupold

Submit targets with marked holes for each event. At the bottom of the target mark the word "sticks" then mark with a line drawn to each one of the holes. At the top of the target mark the word "Freehand" and connect with two lines to the bullet holes. Where possible do not intersect the lines. This keeps the targets clean and easy to measure and understand.

All targets submitted can only have the 4 holes in the paper (or less if you miss!)

Submit them to me at:

North Bend Wa. 98045

As for prizes: Qualified entrants for prizes must have been a memeber of this site prior to January first of 2006 or have 50 posts in there total. Everyone is welcome to participate but prizes are only going to be awarded to the members who have been involved with this site for the minimum time shown.

A list of prizes will be made during the next week. The donating member will decide which of the two catagories it will be for. The winning member will then have first choice with the second runner up having second choice and so on.

Thank you for the update, etc. Lord willing I will have my 416 back in time to shoot both categories. If not, I will enter with just my 300Ultra.

Shot the match with my 375 today. Lots of fun, JJ thanks so much for doing all the work. If I can help in any way let me know. Most of my shots so-so but my 50yd offhand I am ecstatic about!! Good luck guys and remember its just for fun and a chance to get out and shoot.

It would be nice to hear from each guy as he shoots. It will keep this thread at the top of the list then.

Thanks Nick, I have no targets yet to score or tally up but we have a month yet. It might be easier too with many places going to Daylight savings this weekend too.

I took the day off to test some loads and work on a school project.

I practiced the 100 yd. shots with sticks a little -- shooting my .30-06 while my other barrel cooled between groups.

I always seemed to have one shot dead on, and the other high left. Sometimes the first shot was the bad one, sometimes the second. Anyone have anything similar happen, or any suggestions?

I figured I'd shoot the 100 yd. stage first then move the target in after I got off to a decent start. Maybe next time. ;(

The sticks are tougher than it seems. Definatly not like off a bench. This is the first I tried them and got shots within 4-5 inches of aim point, but not the tiny group I envisioned. Try different heights and moving gun forward or back to find steadiest position. I also found it helped to hold sticks with two fingers and other two fingers along side gun. It takes practice and I may have gotten better but sent my targets in as I felt they were ok. But I will keep trying to use sticks as it has to be better than offhand once you get used to them.

Nick, what you're doing here is seeing that they are better then off hand, but better yet learing the techniques before you would ever need them in Africa.

The real beauty of this is to have those participating get a feel for them and have a kind of African Experince with the shooting here at home.

Imagine the benifit to your experience with the practice now compared to showing up and never having seen them before. This is the Africa forum, and this is a traditional African hunting style. How good is that for all prospective Safari hunters?

Plus the addition of a little friendy competition adds just enough to the tension to make it even more real. Thanks for playing along with us!

I found holding the sticks was steadiest, but holding the forend in front of the sticks was way better for working the bolt quickly for a followup shot.

Sounds like great fun and practical too. Is the May 1 date because you'll be gone after that?

My shooting place promises to be a quagmire most of this month yet.

Here are some targets I shot today with my light gun (7-08 with 140 gr factory loads).

[Linked Image]

The 75 yard target is on the right, and the 50/100 is on the left. I have shot off of sticks a great deal (usually just cross sticks from a sitting position) so the transition to standing tripod was smoother than it otherwise might have been.

My official score is 11.5". I'll bet my 375 will be twice that.

Not bad.
I've been known to shoot groups like those on your right target from the 100-yd bench.

The two in the center box off the sticks was really not a big surprise--it is an accurate gun that I am very familiar with. The one in the center from offhand was pure luck.

Jim, just as soon as I can shoot I will submit one. Sarena says she will submit one also even though she is not a member. My road is blocked and I can't get to the farm to shoot because they are filming a crash scene for the movie "Premonition".

Funny I was blocked from my hunting area and the game managemnet unit I was responsible for during the filming of Harry and Hendersons. I watched quite a bit of that movie as it was filmed along the middle fork of the snoqualmie river. During scene changes I could get by with my truck and then on the way out wait again until the had a break.

Now I have to buy some sticks. Good thing, the list of things I need was getting small.

Really now, sis. Your part of the country does not lack for sticks free for the taking. Two fallen redwood branches and a bit of twine - you're good to go!

(or offer your Pelican charges a pack of cigarettes and you'll get a pair of finely carved, burnished, personalized shooting sticks)
