A close friend passes away and his widow is disposing of his hardware. He picked up a shooter Mod. 71 .348 rifle. This was a put together parts gun so it has no collector value. Problem is I am 53 and really don't think this rifle will allow me to do anything my Marlin 1895 45-70 won't do. Realistically with the 71s peep sight against the Marlin the range I can utilize is the same. Maybe 10 years ago I would grab the Winchester. Also there is really no sentimental attachment, my buddy never really cared for it.

About 600.00. Not about price, just don't think it will shoot for me with irons any better than my Marlin.

If you have never fired a 71 you owe it to yourself to try it. IMO the stock design trumps any lever gun stock ever made. It is the softest shooting lever gun out there, even with the steel butt plate. On the bench, off the bench it is like butter.
Sorry to hear of your friends passing.

I agree, BTW my name is 348Winchester. lol At $600 I would buy every 71 I could find.

Sorry to hear about your friends passing but at that price you would have a great way to remember him even if what you remember was that he didn't like that rifle. Not everyone likes a 71 but they shoot nice and hit hard. You don't just walk into the local store and pick up a box of ammo anymore but you can find it on line with out much problem. A 71 for the price of a good marlin just doesn't happen often.

The M71 348 and 86's looked much better with checkering and good wood. The thing about them is the lack of a scope, the primitive irons and the odd, difficult to find components and ammo for that 348. Long ago I searched for a nice 71 with checkering and never found one at a reasonable price. Just as well as my 99F/.358 win is a better hunting rifle. A search on Gunbroker found some and one may have reblue? They are starting it at $1350.00! M71 348 @ Gunbroker Just as well I never got one.
Select a rifle hunting cartridge that is "Enough Gun" and not one designed to just wound the enemy!

I thought I'd never have one because of the high prices. My friend bought one about a year ago for $500.00 and it's in about 60% condition (bore is pristine though) with the receiver drilled and tapped. The person that said anyone that hasn't shot a 71 before owes it to themselves to do so was not lying. I shot my friends and I had to have one!!! They are the sweetest shooting lever gun I've had my hands on. Finally one fell into my lap yesterday and it's been around the block a time or 2 but the bore on it is also pristine. It's an oldie (made in '37) prewar with the long tang and original peep. I really look forward to shooting this one and hope it shoots as good as my friends rifle ...: Figured you guys over here in this forum would appreciate the pic
I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA

Ain't that the way? A guy can never find a deal on a 71 and would buy it right off if he could, another guy finds a deal and walks. Guess that's life.

Very nice grab for 600.00! I would pull the stitches outta my wallet getting to a M71 for 600!

That's a nice 71 that I would be proud to own. I found out one thing about my 71 and that's when I shoot a deer he goes down instantly. No looking for blood trails.

I'm still in shock about the whole deal.... ...: I put a few extra old goodies on mine: To the OP, post some pictures of your new rifle if you don't mind. I really like these old rifles...

BSA, you really did well if that is what you paid. I would find the money pretty quick for just about any 348 Win for 600.00! You did really well with yours and it looks excellent.
Can't wait to see it on the targets and especially what it looks like up against an old elk.. Should be pretty fun stalking the timber with that big rifle in your hands.
I have told myself, it is the next rifle I will add to my safe, before anything else.. Have to make it a priority now, I have bad Rifle ADD.....

They are a big rifle, but very aesthetic to me. I wished I had never sold mine, but I was offered more money than I could resist....
I never shot an Elk with it, but it sure would hammer Whitetail!
There's just something abut a big-bore lever that draws me to that concept.
That's a nice-looking rifle, bsa.
