That's about it. Find a used one that fits. Most parts are inexpensive and easy to find for the 1100's and 11-87's.

If you want a cheaper gun a Charles daly would do the job. I was in the same boat as you a few years ago with my son. I wanted something light so he could handle it but gas operated so it would be a bit lighter on recoil. The gun I bought was full size but Charles daly sent me a youth stock for something like 14 bucks. He was 8 at the time and skinny as a broom handle, He handled it well and shot 2 geese on early season opening day. Charles daly went out of business but You could probably get one on gun broker or similar sight and probably for a good price. The 12ga's were crap but the 20s run without any hiccups. Just a thought. Good luck.

Mossberg has the SA-20 its made in Eastern Europe and marketed by Mossberg. I think they Weatherby 20ga auto(don't recall the model) is the same gun. Not a bad little shotgun.

My brother bought one for his son a year or so ago, picked it up at Scheels in Appleton WI for I think $400. We took him out to get him acquainted with it. He popped away at clay birds until his arm got tired. Not from the recoil but from swinging through. At one point I ran and got more shells, my brother and I set down our guns and put a couple boxes each through it as well. Well over 100 rnds through it the first day and not a hiccup.
