I have a single shot Sportster and a Marlin 39a, both scoped. Been thinking about a semi auto .22 and putting fiber optic sights on it for some iron sight squirrel hunting. Was going to ask this same question over at RFC, but depending on which forum I asked on I knew what the biased answers would be. So, if you were going out to get one, and not wanting to do a ton of mods to it, which one would you get?

I prefer the 60, love it.

I've had a Marlin 60 for 40 years now, and it shoots quite well, but reliable, it ain't. It chokes and pukes on anything but CCI Mini Mags, and will choke at least once a magazine with them.
I've owned a half dozen or more 10/22s over the years, and they shoot reliably, but at least in factory mode, are nothing to shout about regarding accuracy.
The old Marlin is my first rifle, and I'll not part with it, and it balances a heckuva lot better than any 10/22 I've ever felt, shoots better and we have "history", but if I want reliable, I'll reach for that DSP sporter and suffer thru it's mediocre accuracy.

I've had six 10-22's and about the same number of 60's over the years. The 60's are generally more accurate out of the box than the 10-22's. Reliability has also been better with the 60's. Only one of the 6 10-22's was acceptably accurate out of the box {1" @ 50 yds.} the rest were crap {1.5- 2.5" @ 50 yds.} and only one of the 10-22's could get through a box of 100 cartridges without choking at least once. One never could get through a magazine full without choking, sometimes 3 or 4 times. One extractor and one bedding screw = junk, which is probably why such a huge aftermarket exists trying to get the poorly designed pieces of schit to shoot worth a damn.

I guess I should add some detail to my post.

My grandfather has a old Marlin model 60 that 18 grandkids learned to shoot on. If it has any less then 10,000 rounds through it I would honestly be surprised. It has always ran perfectly, except for the last 5 years. BUT, the gun has NEVER been cleaned until I took a tooth brush and qtips to it, and now it runs about 98% flawless. My model 60 has been perfect, although I have only put about 200 rounds through it.

I own both. I've had a 10-22 since 1980 and a Marlin 60 since probably 1970.

Like them both, but the Model 60 Marlin is my favorite .22 auto.

Out of the box, my Marlin is more accurate & feeds everything. I had to spent a lot of money to make my 10-22 accurate. And the 10-22 has jammed a lot more than my Marlin 60 ever has.

The thing I dislike the most about my Ruger are the magazines. I hate to load them & I have NEVER found a factory or aftermarket Mag for my Ruger 10-22 that is 100% reliable.

I love the tube feed on my Marlin. Just drop them in and your good to go. No magazine to fumble around with. I rarely ever clean the Marlin & it's still accurate & reliable. For a cheap plain old Factory .22 autoloader, the Marlin is hard to beat.

I'd go Marlin 795. Add Tech Sights if you want irons. Mine has a 6x42. The 60 and 795 are similar, just different magazines... tube vs. single-stack detachable.

If you want to customize, then its hard to beat a 10/22.

Every Marlin 60 I have had /seen are true jam-amatics. Ruger 10-22's always function, and have tons of custom parts.....but that's just my opinion.....

I've got both of them but I always use the 10/22 when I go small game hunting. It just works everytime plus I can reload it 100 times faster. I bring 4-5 extra magazines with me that are already loaded up and just swap as I need to instead of fumbling around with a spring rod and loose bullets.

A stock Model 60 will beat a stock 10/22 in the accuracy department. Also, the model 60 is slimmer through the action area, which makes an open sighted rifle easier to pack one handed.

As far as reliability goes, I think both are similar. Feed 'em decent ammo, and keep 'em reasonably clean, and you likely won't have problems.

+1. But for me it's the 10/22. I've owned and shot both, it's a tie for accuracy and reliability depending on the rifle. Keep 'em clean and they'll both keep chugin' along. Each rifle is a story unto itself. Most .22s are ammo sensitive and finding the right ammo is the key. There is so much aftermarket stuff for the 10/22 it never gets boring. My current "10/22" is an AMT clone with a Boyds Evolution stock. The "cool factor" could never be matched by an M60.

Model 60 for me. I bought one 3 or 4 years ago and I love it! Never had any misdeed ing issue with it unless it's super dirty but I try to totally strip it and clean it about once a year. Otherwise, I shoot it until I start having problems and I shoot it a lot.

Got my first 10/22 in the mid 60's and have owned over a half dozen since then.

Have built 3 customs over the years, on the 10/22 action.

They are very dependable if kept reasonably clean.

The mags are usually the culpret when they start misfiring.

Just flush them out with carb cleaner or starting fluid and shake dry and keep on shooting.

I'm confused by all of the 10/22 jam-o-matics. I've had nothing but reliable service out of my three. Any mis feeds were remedied a mag swap. I also have 5 BX-25 magazines that work well.

Never owned a M-60.

The jamming is usually failure to eject {stovepiping} and it's caused by a combination of design {single extractor} and sloppy dimensional tolerances/poor quality control. The loose dimensional tolerances contribute in several ways but the main culprits are extractors positioned too far forward so that they don't hold the casing tightly enough to the bolt face and magazines that are positioned so they don't hold the ejector lip in proper alignment for solid contact with case rims.

Some are, some aren't. It's a roll of the dice whether you get a well fitted one or not.

I think either one will have the same effect, which is to make you appreciate your 39a all the more.
