Contrary to some others, I would go with the 14 twist if you want to shoot 40s. Yes a 8 twist will shoot 40s, but how accurate? My experience with fast twist and 40s is they are not real accurate. I had Jim Kobe build me a coyote calling 220 swift. Its a Rem 700 stainless action, Lilja 26" #4 contour, 12 twist, Mcmillan sako hunter mcswirley blue/black/gray stock with Leupold 4-14X. I prefer 50 grain nos bt bullets for coyotes and this gun shoots them into 1/2-5/8" consistently.

by the way thanks for the info I didn't realize they 8 twist would stabilize the light bullets Your thinking of twist rates is backwards, if you only want to shoot 40 grainers you could easily use a 1-16" twist, with a 1-8" twist you can stabilize the heavies like the Berger 80gr VLD

223 AI....8 or 9 twist....53 gr V max
Heavier bullets will retain velocity & energy better downrange
Wanna shoot a 40 grain ? Shoot a 20 caliber something

Not sure but I am sure he'd be better off at 2700fps....

Add the TNT & the Sierra blitz too the "poof" list... All of which have a velocity limit below that of what the Swift is capable of, so I don't really see the issue. Though I'm not sure about the new high velocity 55 grain HP-TNT. But it's not a 40 grain, so isn't really pertinent to this conversation.

I don't need a heavy bullet gun if I want to go long range ill use my 260 or 338 lapua..... im looking for light easy to point quick dead on to 300 and can hold a touch high at 400. with the higher velocity when 90% of the coyotes I shoot are running so it nice when you don't have to lead them so far.

Your right. Most, and I mean most coyotes I have shot are moving.
Buy the post of "some" on this thread, I think they need to do their research with calibers in semi-auto guns. With high capacity magazines. It is easy to tell which ones I am taking about.
Gun Shows are almost as comical as boat ramps in the Spring.

Matt, If a flat-shooting rifle is what you are after, don't let the comments in this thread sway you from your original build concept.
Now, I have owned my fare share of fast-twist rifles shooting heavy-for-caliber bullets, and will likely own more in the future. But for the purposes you described, twisting the barrel fast will only lead to increased pressure, loss of velocity and often times a reduction in accuracy potential shooting the light bullets you are planning on shooting. Build for purpose, and don't look back.
A few years ago I was a member of the, "build it with a 1:8 for flexibility" crowd. I have, however, seen the fault in this mentality for rifles exactly like you describe - high velcoity varmint rifles slingin' light bullets. Bullets tearing apart before making it to the target, those that do not maintaining good accuracy, pressure spiking fast, etc.
Grab a good 1:14" tube, and grin ear to ear as you hammer yotes with little 'ol bullets going mach 7213 and ignore the low grumble of the 1:8 twist mantra coming from the mouths of the fast-twist brethren.
