None. But if you are looking for top quality, Barnes banded solids or some of our local Dzombo solids are pretty much hard to beat.
I use the Barnes banded solids in my .416 Rigby.

And why wouldn't they deform?

There are a bunch of brass or bronze monolithic solids on the market today. Brass tends to be more malleable, while bronze tends to be more brittle. Either type is generally superior to almost all of the lead-core "solids," but some of those perform very well too.

I totally agree. The worst deformation I ever experienced were from Federal Trophy Bonded solids, both in .416 Rigby and .470.

Barnes solids have performed well for me, but I have had some mild deformation with them in .416 Rigby, in terms of the meplat riveting.

I'm booked for trophy bull elephant/cape buff/hippo/croc next year and will be bringing Northfork solids in .416 and .470. Haven't used Northforks before.

Mule Deer:

Please tell us which solids you used to take your elephants, hippos and rhino with, including make, caliber and how they performed.

Why don't you let Mule Deer speak for himself so we can learn from his personal experiences shooting DG with solids?

I didn't read the post correctly, I missed the "ever" part of the question and thought the OP was just asking for a good recommendation. Lots of good ones out there and often-times good solids can be theoretically re-used, but "never" is the realm of death and taxes.

I've shot some Barnes banded solids but I have no idea if they deform since I've never recovered one.

Anyone have any experience with those new Woodleigh Hydro-statically Stabilized Solids?

Why do you do this kind of thing constantly? confused

We get the message that you have been to Africa a bunch of times and shot some African dangerous game;that really takes nothing more than the ability to stroke a bunch of large checks.

Be reminded that Elmer Keith doled out a bunch of good advise on dangerous game rifles, cartridges and bullets,is frequently cited, and IIRC went on a grand total of one safari.

Your advise is appreciated, but calling out other people for passing along information (appreciated especially considering his stature in the shooting/hunting community) is distracting and,(how do they say?) unseemly grandstanding. smirk

I have only ever once had an interesting result with solids. Yes they can and do deform on some animals as was the case shown below:

[Linked Image]
Above: Three recovered solids and if memory serves they were 600 gr Woodleigh projectiles from a 500 A-Square retrieved from an elephant. One was found on the opposite shoulder and the other two I cannot say for sure. When offered a reward and very clear instructions are not given, the skinners are only interested in getting the bullets to you for the reward.

[Linked Image]
Above: There has been some speculation as to why this one was deformed in the middle as opposed to having been deformed on the nose. The hunter marked the bullets with a sharpie to tell the difference between the various hand loads. Some of these markings stayed intact even after the elephant was skinned.

And yet another insightful and polite post from BobinNH! Many thanks, Bob. I don't understand why folks who have a lot to offer want to engage in such a way. It is unseemly.

Worst I've ever seen are the TBBC and the best I've ever used by a country mile are GS Custom monolithic solids. smile
