This is the bullet I load for my old EG in .300 Savage: http://www.hornady.com/store/30-Cal-.308-150-gr-SP/I load Sierra boat tail bullets for 30-06 and are these too long for the .300 Savage case? It seems like you really cut down on your powder load in the short .300 case loading these types of bullets. Maybe I should just use this hornady bullet for both .300 Savage and .30-06?
This is my rifle. There are many like it, but this one is mine.

BT's might make a difference if your 300 was in a bolt gun, but probably not in a 99.
I do think BT's make a difference in the 06 though. A long time ago I had a Model 54 Winchester that preferred Sierra 165gr BTSP's with 48.7gr of 4064. Very accurate.

150 grain Sierra boat tails are not too long for the 300 Savage.

I would think that your most important issue would be the overall cartridge length, not the other issues. 150 BT should measure out just fine.

What I'm getting from the OP is a concern that with the bullet seated to the correct OAL the boat tail is going to hang down below the neck and use up too much powder capacity.
That's not going to be an issue with the 150 Sierra.

Boat tail bullets for hunting are more hype than anything else. Rare is the hunter that shoots at distances great enough to take advantage of the boat tail design.

No , that was just a couple facts that relate to the answer.

E Blair: after mathman mentioned on here the practice of loading 168 g match bullets in the .300 sav, I decided to give it a whirl with some 168 g sierra match kings. lo and behold, it works, and I can get 41 g of H4895 in the case. pressure is not excessive in my gun (winchester brass, CCI 200's). groups are hanging around 1" for 5 shots, although I don't have any pics.
cavaet: My rifle is a Savage 16 bolt gun. I don't know what your results would be in something else, like a 99. The bullet is not in the lands on my gun. I am planning to load a couple up tonight, can give you the OAL. and maybe a pic, cause they look flat out cool.

here we go: OAL on these is 2.73". you could do a 165 SGK a little shorter.

My 1955 Savage 99F in 300 loves Sierra 150 Grain Spitzer flat base bullets, next pick is Hornady in the same weight and style. Boat tails shoot ok, best accuracy has been with flat base. 41 Grains of Reloder 15 and you are off to the races for accuracy and killing power. Shot a lot of deer with this combo and they all died quickly.

I'm new to reloading the .300 Savage for great grandad's M99 EG dated 1949. I picked up a Lee loader on EBay and found some 165 gr Hornady InerLocks on sale for $20 per 100. Fair price? Seemed to be, and that's the weight I wanted to try. The Lee loader calls for Winchester 760 for that weight of bullet. I just need to find that ball powder and some primers. Has anyone tried this combination?

Several pounds of 760 available here at my FFL's if you run out of luck there. Been there for awhile.

Has anyone tried this combination? You got a fair price on the bullets, but I don't think much of W760 in that cartridge. You'd be better off springing for a basic scale and using RL15, 4895, 4064, 3031 or similar.

I found some Winchester primers and the W760 at Cabelas today. Being new to reloading, is there a particular reason the W760 is bad? Or are there just better powders out there? Also, would anyone with a reloading manual be able to perhaps email me scanned images of the .300 Savage section so I can see what other loads might be worked up should I invest in a scale?

I'm thinking you should be able to Google some loads up pretty easy, but I haven't tried that combination. Somebody here probably has that 300 info already scanned into photobucket or some such. Good luck with the loading! Fun hobby.

W760 is on the slow side for the case capacity and operating pressure of the little 300. This may help you get started: http://reloadersnest.com/frontpage.asp?CaliberID=53
