While shooting the 336 in 35 rem today I broke the band screw for the forearm. Midway sells replacements in blued and stainless and one review said to go back with stainless because it is stronger and wont fail as easily as the blued version. Anyone else agree?

. The stainless screw breaks about as easily as the blue one. So I don't agree. The screw breaks because of magazine movement under recoil. Marlin reduced the issue by using a much larger screw in the front mag band.

Good info, thanks! I ordered one of each and may have to order the updated barrel band and screw if it ever occurs again.

The screw breaks because for the last ten years they been using cheap screws
If you can get your hands on an old screw, it won't shatter
