He was lucky they say as it was caught somewhat by accident when what the docs first thought was a gall ladder issue was in fact this ass kicker. Usually, by the time you are symptomatic with pancreatic it is too late to do anything but manage pain and get ready to die...6 months. Fortunately (I tend to disagree with the fortunately portion of this program) he was a candidate for a deal called a Whipple Procedure whereas they basically gut you, re-plumb you and hope for the best. It did give him some extra time and they made it clear it was in no way a cure...the docs at Dartmouth-Hitchcock made it clear that pancreatic cancer will kill you eventually. Great call as they were correct. Having seen this procedure and the after effects including chemo, radiation and countless meds he had to take daily...I am all set with that option. No thanks. I will take the 6 months and tip my hat on the way out the door. In the end, cancer wins out again...decimating a decent man who gave 20 years of service to his country back in the day. No need for a lot of small talk but I felt I wanted to get this off my head...my brother was 10 1/2 years my senior and at 59, way too young to be shown the door. I fully believe there is something better out there after we are done with this place and with luck he is there now sipping a beer and having a laugh...pain-free, sickness free, and with a body that had not betrayed him....hanging with some friends and family who went this route before him. We all know somebody close that has seen first hand the ravishing effects of cancer...a real ball buster, but we also know that for the most part, we cannot pick and choose how we come and go from this place.
We will now return to our regularly scheduled programming!

You may not want small talk. I have been watching you and just wondering. You've been "different" than the fatjack I remember. I'm still the same old me and I just wanted to offer up my condolences. Merry Christmas, as well, John.

LBK, classy post as always.

Just recently my sister pointed something out. Our mother died this past spring after a long and fruitful life. No fun, but at 89 we, even she, couldn't complain. Our father was taken by cancer at 56, leaving the party way too early, or as she put it "life-interrupted" The grief for some reason is more painful, deeper, and longer lasting when they go too soon.

Elmer,

Condolences to you and yours. I lost both parents and 3 of 4 grandparents the the C. A couple had a long fruitfull life, mom was 48. I comfort myself knowing the suffering is over for all, because the suffering was universal. The spirits still guide my friend.

[bleep],

That is a thing of beauty. Thinking I need to look at a Baer for a retirement piece. I've had 1911's my entire adult life and I don't think there is anything better.

Don't like DAO's either. But I have one 'cause it's very small in my pocket and deadly accurate inside, oh....5'? laugh I prefer to think of it as a mature alternative to wrasslin'.

I resort to a knife after the 7 rounds are gone. If whosomever it is still breathes.

Oh, and anyone anywhere can say what they want about how beautiful their sunsets are, Africa brags it up a lotbut the sunsets in the Missouri breaks are unmatched...

And I might add, 1911's rock...only auto I've ever had faith in, lessons learned during crystalline moments in time scattered over too many years in Dade Co. Florida.

I still maintain however there is no visual training aid more immediate in effect than a RSB muzzle pressed to your face.

Years ago my brother had a friend who carried a RSB in the door side pocket of his VW Beetle. He picked up a hitchhiker one eve, a big black dude, out in the middle of nowhere. He was shifting into 3d as the story was told, when the black dude pulled a knife and told him to pull over and get out of the car.

He repeated that more stridently as the shift into 4th gear was completed and the speed approached 55. My brother's friend was an aerospace engineer and no doubt he was working calculus in his mind, or maybe point mass equations, WTF knows, hey? It was a long time back and some things are forgotten.

The African got very agitated and screamed for the guy to stop and pull over or some such chitt. Bro's friend stuck the RSB in his face and said "Get out." He did too.

He said there was a brief image in the rear view of the African doing cartwheels or something similar, though the loom of the tail lights was not bright or the image clear.

I damn near fractured some ribs when I heard that tale.

Always be kind to your fellow man and never go unprepared.

With Warmest Regards,

BD

Beautiful sunrises/sunsets, incredible edible babes, somber news of a good man's passing: this thread is life in a nutshell.

It could only get better with a pic of a scantily clad girl clutching a .223AI on a cold hillside in Montana at daybreak.
