Do any of you guys know what the rate of twist is for the Ruger 77 Hawkeye All Weather in .35 Whelen 22" barrel? I went to their web site but they no longer offer the .35 Whelen in this rifle. I know some of you guys have one of these rifles, or know the answer to my question. I appreciate your help.

Thank you very much for the specific info. I was hopeing that the rate of twist would be 1:12" or at the slowest 1:14".

Some were actually made with 12" twist and some with 16" - though Ruger always only published 16" for them.

Ya gotta check each rifle with a tight patch to know. Been on that for a few years now myself - checking twist on various 35Whelen Hawkeyes. It'll be obviously one or the other when u check.

Might want to find out what it will shoot before you worry about the twist. Had a 77 in .358 Win, 16" twist that dearly loved 250 grain Hornady flat base spitzers. Talking MOA love. Sadly, it loved 225 Partitions mo betta.

Where I to build I'd run a 1-14" but I've yet to have anything not work in my 1-16" twist Whelen in the past 23 years. The 250gr Partition is my main bullet but everything else has shot very well (225gr Partition, 225gr TSX, 225 Ballistic tip, 250gr Speer and 250gr Hornady).

I'd only worry about the 1-16" if I was gonna start throwing some 310gr Woodleighs or some other sort.

The 1-16" is great with cast bullets.

Found this thread when looking at my M77 All Weather 35 whelen. Measured it several ways - 1:12" in mine. I'd guess they made some 12 twist 350 Rem barrels and then chambered them to 35 whelen. I'm happy - been wanting to try 275 and 320 Woodleighs. A 12 twist should stabilize them.

My blued .358 hawkeye is 1/12. It was made in feb. of 2008.

My 35 Whelen stainless Hawkeye has a 1 in 16 twist and shoots 200 and 250 grainers equally well. I'm talking about 3/4 inch up to 1.25 inch depending on how well I'm doing from the bench. The only modification to the rifle was a SpecTech adjustable trigger which I have set at 2 pounds. I fretted over the slow twist until I shot the rifle some. Not any more. Much worry over nothing.

Loads used were Hornady Superformance 200 gr. and Remington CoreLokt 250 gr.

My newly acquired Ruger 35 Whelen stainless Hawkeye has a 12" twist - yea. I have on hand 286s, 300s and 310s just itchin for a run thru that tube. Hope it shoots.

I have three rifles in .35 Whelen, a tangsafety Ruger M77, Remington M700 Classic and a custom built on an Oberndorf Mauser action. I picked up the Mauser at an estate sale and when I physicaly picked up that Mauser, well it came home with me. So far it has been in one the very sudden demise of two very tasty cow elk. Since the Mauser came home the other two rifles have more or less been retired. I should take them out of hibernation and play with them before they get too depressed.
What I can say is the Ruger and Remington have 1 in 16" twists and they shot reasonably well woth Paco Kelly's H335 load. That's a 250 gr. bullet and 53.0 gr. of H335. Got velocities in the 2500 tp 2500+ FPS range with the Speer 250 gr. Spitzer Hot Core and the 250 gr. Hornady spire and round point bullets. Groups were in the 1.0 to 1.25" ranges depending on the bullet. This was a just load 'em and shoot'em with no special work other than to determine a safe pressure level. The loads also worked in the Mauser.
My pet load for the Mauser is 60.4 gr. of Re15 and the 225 gr. Barnes TSX. The two elk hsot with that l0oad was bang/flop/drt with absolutely no back talk from said elk.
