As my Dad gets older, he is dividing his firearms between my brother and I. Yesterday I was given an older Ruger rifle with the older skeletonized stock.
The stock is somewhat dull and I was wondering if anyone here has ever tried to restore the luster of a black synthetic stock. What did you use and what were you're results?
Thanks.

The old boat paddles look great if you wipe them down with some Breakfree CLP. Let it sit for a few minutes, then wipe off the excess with a dry rag. They look new. Been there, done that.

Thanks. Ballistol - works wonders on those stocks.

Birchwood Casey makes a stock rejuvenator. It's like armor all but it's not greasy. Gives back the satin look that some synthetic stocks lose over time.

Armor-all and any of the oil based products I've tried look better for a short time. BTDT. The dull haze comes right back within a few weeks.
You either love em or hate em. as is, there ain't much you can do to make em look any better.

Why do you want luster? It ain't gonna impress the game none. If you are gonna hang around camp to brag on your flashy rifle and those 800 yard shots, buy a Weatherby. Ugly is good. No one covets/steals ugly. Besides, there is a certain panache to having the ugliest rifle in camp. Ask me how I know.....

Mix ballistol and water 50/50. Rub in with a toothbrush then wipe it all off. It will look like new for a long time and will not be overly shiny. I do this on my synthetic knife handles every year or two.

My Accumark came with a rather dull gray synthetic stock and I could not get any elk. I went after it with some 600 grit sandpaper, then a thin coat of brake fluid, and buffed that off with a lint free Marino (not Hampshire) wool cloth. Now I get an elk every year.

I had a browning once that had a stock that"bloomed". I called browning and they asked me to send it in....they replaced it free of charge. It's worth a call to ruger....

I would go the other route and scuff it up with 3M pad or steel wool to kill any shine.
If you really want bling then try the automotive products for synthetic bumpers and wheel covers.

I have a 77 22 and a 223 and they have both been hunted hard. The 223 for a coyote gunn and th 22 for coon hunting chasing dogs and running traps and every other duty of a 22. I think they look better well used than when new. The 22 has the grip all polished ant he cheek rest. You know they never were very pretty.. But I kinda like them.
