I am attempting to find a late 60's early 70's 99 Savage with octogonal barrel. NOT a 1899 re-issue. I saw a "normal" 99 Savage in the gun shop in Spokane in circa 1972 with octogonal barrel, but it was too expensive for me. now 30+ years older and not much brighter, i am interested acquiring one.
thanks for any help/pointers. terry

ask on savage collectors of the mdl# and year. I am not sure what you are looking for . the only one I know of is the 1895 mdl that was made for a short time...

I have an 1899C with 24 in octagonal bbl. Is this what you are looking for? It is as new. Looks new but I am 3rd owner. It was not cheap when I bought it.

There has only been 1 Savage 99 cataloged with an octagon barrel since Savage stopped making sporting firearms in 1917, so that they could convert to military production in support of the US entering WW1. Since then, only the 75th Anniversary Commemorative, cataloged in 1970, has been cataloged with an octagon barrel. There were also some 99Cs made up with the leftover octagon barrels, but they weren't cataloged.

1899Cs weren't cataloged after WW1. The octagon and 1/2R 1/2O barrel configurations, along with the 25-35, 32-40, and 38-55 chamberings weren't cataloged after WW1. If you have a receiver with a post-WW1 serial number and any of the 5 attributes that I have noted, it is (probably) either an original gun made from leftover pre-WW1 parts or it isn't original. Also, I believe that the "standard" cataloged octagon barrel length was 26", so a 24" octagon barrel would seem to be either a special order or cut.

If it's a rotary magazine gun in .308 Win it is the 1895 Commemorative put out in 1970.
If it's a clip magazine its a C model built using the leftover Commemorative .308 barrels.

[color:"red"]Now that we have confirmed my memory, how do I get a stock 1970's 99 with the "leftover" octogon barrel?[/color]

The leftover barrel C models are pretty scarce. I might know a dealer with one but be prepard to send the proverbial arm and leg for it.
I'll PM his info.

it might be better to buy an original in shooter condition in 303 caliber. I love my 303's..
