This one has been in here more than once, but it IS kinda nice, and it's "correct" for the period. M70 standard grade from '49, with steel Redfield Jr mounts and an older Lyman 4X. I'm putting the same scope and mounts on a '52 .270 standard I just bought...stay tuned for the pix. I really like this combo for a vintage 70. Bob RGK , That is as good as it gets, I am in need of that very base and rings , if you have any extra please PM me. very best

stock options: I have fwt crf 280. original stock was cut to 12.5" LOP with thick pad, but it's a little short for me. Action is bedded and barrel floated; shoots rem 150g consistently around 1" 3 shot groups. Should I have spacer added to lengthen LOP (ugly) or get new stock (maybe synthetic)?

Just buy a different stock. Many options of good synthetics out there like Mcmillan, Bansner (High tech specialties), Borden Rimrock/pacific research, Brown precision, or you could find a take off wood or factory tupperware for it. Ebay and CDNN usually have many to choose from. I'm assuming yours is an older New Haven CRF "Classic", which will require the 2 piece bottom metal and LA (long action) stock.
I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA

Thanks for the kind words.

Mr Whitebird, I'm in extreme SW GA and we just do not have those vistas and views, we are beautiful and green ,as a retired pilot I got to see it all here after 10660 hrs cropdusting. Some one picked out a fantastic place for a garden and was pretty well heeled to fence it with that kind of fence. very best, I enjoy your photos! win poor

A mid July hail storm wiped my garden out... will try again next year. Might have to dig a few more out of the safe and take some more pictures....

This has been one of the most enjoyable threads I've been exposed to on any gun forum. Great photos of great guns, along with some knowledge and expert commentary on those guns. Keep it coming. Bob

I finally got my 24" 30-06 back from bedding and swapped scopes around. I don't think the vortex viper will live long term on the 06 due to the reticle seems to be thin enough to fade away at last light. I really like the VX2 2-7x33 on my 7-08 20" Compact!! Really fits that rifle perfect. Next is checking for level good enough for what I can do with what I have, bore sight and hit the range when I can. Thought I'd share my 2 big game set ups.
