What model and chambering is your favorite.
For me, although I like them all...it's a mid-late 50's .270 fwt.

1956 Target in a sporter stock, in good ole 30-06 , it shoots 165 and 168 sub moa and drops SW GA whitetails bang flop, up to 225# like a sack of cow feed off the back of a ton truck! Longest kill shot 365 yards,stepped off by a long legged guy. I call the gun' Carlos'.

I know you did not ask for #2 but a gun I found Thanksgiving out of the PNW is fast becoming #1 in foul weather on whitetails, a 53'mod 70 with a shillen #3, great factory trigger and a Pacific Research/Rimrock stock.I have been a .25 cal fan for 10 years,the deer do a little rodeo kick and buck, may drop nose and plow dirt 20 yards but Ive never lost nor had to track one out of 25-30 out to 330 yards, most were 200 and under, 175 to 225# body weight.Bullets have been 120 gr Winchester super X PEP's or Win black box 110 gr accubonds,I favor the accubonds as they hold together and do the job as well they are very accurate in both my .25 cal guns

Bringing up #3 is a 95% Westerner in 264 win mag, I was the first to fire the gun since factory,I scoped and zeroed it in less that 10 rounds ,took it out late that evening and neck shot a freezer buck at prob 135 yards. bang flop.It will be my 500 yard Whitetail hammer, I just hope I can burn the barrel out in my golden years, I doubt it though!I do love the high comb- MC stock, it is loud ,recoil is sharp but I never noticed on freezer buck.

I only own one model 70 and 06 that was my father in laws.. Never fired it so far.. Only owned two other another 06, I sold to a collector friend of mine, and a Westerner .264.. That one I should have kept... But I was young and foollish..

I love my pre 64 mod 70 in 264 win mag! hope this year I can draw out a tag and post some cool pics like you guy's do

57 30-06, picked up the stock this summer, no complaints so far!

Ha ha. I thought It sounded like something someone would say about their kids ....I don't have a lot of pre 64's but they are all purpose built to suit my needs. Let me explain, here are some pics to help with my thought process as well:


My deer rifle:
1956 FWT 30-06 bone stock all original except for my glass bedding. I like a good shooting rifle and will sacrifice a little on the collectability side of things to insure this happens:

As for my 1957 270 FWT, well that's the black sheep of the family but I still like it. I'll post pics of that one in another post since they limit me to 10 on this one:

My 270 FWT has given me problems. When I bought it, it was 100% all original. I later sold the stock for $400.00 and replaced it with a stock I refinished and added a Winchester reproduction pad (Galazan). I bedded it (as per usual). It has had it's ups and downs in shooting. It shoots awesome 3 shot groups, but it likes to fling the 4th and fifth shot. I'm working on getting that taken care of in my handloads. I had the first ever pre 64 extractor take a chit on me with this rifle. I just fixed that problem last week. Very easy fix I might add. Anyway here are a few pics of my 1957 270 FWT:

Looks like the Talley lightweight rings are very popular here. I'll be putting them on my 3rd M70, a '55 standard in .30-06. It's slightly battered up, so it'll be getting a refinish and reblue after it's glass-bedded. It'll wear a minty 4X Lyman Permacenter.

Some awesome M70s here...my favorite place to visit.

I just started shooting a 1950 Super Grade in 270. I figured if I was going to admit to shooting a 270, at least I could complete the story with the Winchester S.G. part.

Handwerk: I have a "soft spot" for early 1950's Supergrades in calibers 22 Hornet, 220 Swift and 257 Roberts!
I have the Roberts and the Swift but that Hornet is going to be a "toughie".
Secondly I enjoy the heavy barrel models. I have some Bull Guns, Targets and several Varmints - calibers are less important to me in these models, I like them all.
I have a "minty" 1949 year of manufacture "National Match" Rifle that has an action that is so smooth that just for the fun of it about once a year I unvault it and "work" the silky smooth action a time or two then wipe it down and stow it away - til next time.
Aaaahhh heck its just to tough to pick a single "favorite".

My favorite pre-64 is the 1957 manufactured Model 70 STANDARD in .243 that my grandpa bought new in 1957. Of course I may be a little biased in my choice!! I understand the .243 standard version is quite rare??? When my dad passed away in 2008 and my brother and I divided his guns, he got the .243 since he had used it deer hunting when he was younger. I had to settle for the Remington 722 in .257 Roberts that I used, but I was fine with that. The .243 still has the K-10 that my grandpa put on it, and my brother says that is the most accurate rifle he has shot!!! I would like to find one for myself, but don't ever see the standard version, just the featherweight. Otherwise, I would love a Pre-64 in .257 Roberts and behind that comes the .264 Win Magnum. Maybe sometime down the road......

Mine is a '61 30-06 FWT in a McMillan Compact stock.

RandySavage99: I have a pair of minty Model 70 Standard Rifles in 243 Winchester but they are from the years 1961 and 1962 respectively.
There are some 243 Standards out there but they are pricey anymore when found.
I saw a 243 Standard recently at the Idaho Falls, Idaho gunshow (last month).
I remember I was impressed with the condition of that Rifle but the asking price and the fact that I have that model/caliber already covered, kept me from "bidding" on it.
If you wish I will keep my eye out for that guntrader and see if he still has it at the upcoming gunshows I attend.
Hope you find a Standard 243 to fill your need.
By the way, I sold a Remington 722 in 257 Roberts a year ago for a Proffessor from my town - the price he wanted for that Rifle caused it to sell VERY QUICKLY.
There is lots of interest in the 722's in 257 Roberts in case you ever decide to sell it.

I always keep an eye out for the .243 Standards, hoping I'll run across one someday at a price I can afford. Same with the .257 Roberts in the Model 70. As for the Remington 722, that one was bought by my Grandpa for my dad's 14th birthday, and was my first deer rifle, so I'm planning on passing it down to my son. They are sure a nice little deer rifle. Thanks for the response.

I've got one as well, best stock for the FWT in my opinion.

Here's one I found about 10 years ago at Cabela's on the used rack. The throat was washed out so I re-barreled it.

Somebody had sanded the stock and flattened the diamonds so I bought a checkering tool and cradle and recut the panels.

I found an old Outers stock refinishing kit in the garage and the stain was just about an exact match for the pre-64 stain. So I re-stained the panels and then gave the entire rifle stock an oil finish.

That stock is actually an original steel-butt Monte Carlo. I should have propped the rifle up a little so that the side profile would have photographed better.

Mine is a 1953 300 H&H that a friend here on the Campfire helped me find!
