Can I use a Lee Collet Die for standard 280 to neck size my 280AI brass? It seems like it would be fine as I don't think the shoulder contacts anything in these dies, but wanted some feedback prior to ordering. I did call Lee and ask this question. Their answer was that it would be fine IF the intersection of the case neck and shoulder is in the same position. Looking at cartridge drawings for the standard and AI version, there is .017" difference in that position between them, with the AI being the shorter of the two.

Simlarly, can I use a Forster Ultra Ultra Micrometer Seater Die for a standard 280 on the AI? This one doesn't seem as feasible to me. After looking at section pictures, it looks like the die is machined to match the cartridge should precisely.

Thoughts?

Yes, you should be able to use the Lee collet die made for the parent case on it's AI offspring. At least I'm using a .243 on a .243 AI and a .250 Savage on a .250AI and they work just fine.

Couldn't say about the Forster as I've never owned one.

I use a Lee collet 280 die for my .28AI too. Also use the Forster seater. Great combination for loading straight ammo.

Super T, the Forster seater is for the 280 rather than the 280AI?

Thanks for the feedback, everyone.

I think I've been convinced to go with the 280 collet die.

Wish I could find a Forster seater in 280AI....
