Not AS effective. If you want to hunt, stay with the blade in front and the barrel sights that come on the Sharps. If you want to shoot target competition, A tang sight and a front sight using interchangeable apertures is a must. The two types of sights don't walk in both worlds. If you plan to hunt and also compete, you need a rifle set up for each venue if you want to do well.
The dirty little secret is that if you fool around with aperture target sights, you will never become really good with the barrel and blade set up for hunting. I very rarely shoot target sights anymore, as I prefer to get the results I get with buckhorn and blade.

While I will primarily be hunting with it, I DO like to give my aging eyes every bit of help I can. I've seen what can be done with barrel sights (thank you very much, Bill! ) and will stick with them for now. Ed

Many numbers unless you're target shooting a tang sight on the sharps is more or less just a pain in the butt, unless it happens to be like the old style with the slide identical to the barrel sight..

Having had too many "pain in the butt" things in my life, I'll just stick with barrel sights, thank you. Gentlemen, thank you for your education on the sights! Ed
