Been thinking of going out of my comfort zone areas, and trying someplace new.
Unit 6a borders the Valle Caldera, and isn't that far from me.
Was wondering if anyone here has hunted it it, and how you did, what you saw, and how's the terrain?

Been there a few times during muzzleloader seasons. NE part of the unit. Missed a real nice bull with my flintlock 4 years ago. It is a bit crowded for my likes, encountered too many 4 wheelers where they shouldn't be so we started hiking into San Pedro Parks wilderness area to get away from them. Flat top mesas with steep sides getting up them. Have since moved to another unit down south to get away from the yahoos on quads.

Shoot me a PM if you do end up applying and draw out, I'll send you some Intel.

Like Razz said, it can get pretty crowded in areas. You defiantly will not be alone anywhere near the VC border. You can hunt just about any type of terrain you like from Pion/Juniper flats to mixed conifer. Are you looking at a bull or cow hunt?

Whatever I can draw. Was gonna go all 3 choices.
Im tired of trying for seargents as first 2 choices and unit 2 for cow as the 3rd and not drawing anything.
Heck, been 10 years since I've drawn a deer tag. I live/work in the unit 2's, know where the deer are, but can't draw!
Same for elk, so thinking of trying something/place new, but still close.

Isn't this the unit that was most heavily impacted by the Las Conchas fire three years ago? Is it recovering pretty well?

The fire affected 6B and C mostly. Some of the burn scar is recovering nicely while others are not doing as well. It is nice to see some aspen stands coming back where they were absent before the burn in places.

Splat', drawing the Sargents is a pretty tough proposition,( like 1% +/-) 6 is higher but still fairly tough to draw. (10% +/- last time I checked) 6 can be a fun hunt, but like mentioned before, you will have to do some work and planning to avoid the crowds. If you draw shoot me a PM and I will try to help you with more specifics.
